50 Years Ago, 1956

St. Dom’s Arena officials revealed yesterday it has been found the new floor that will be ready for the first roller-skating program June 8 will be the largest portable floor in the world. For the past three years the biggest such removable surface anywhere has been (naturally) in Texas, at Texas A&M College. The new maplewood cover at St. Dom’s will be 15,253 square feet, about 2,000 square feet more than the Texas installation.

25 Years Ago, 1981

A scarcity of summer jobs for high school and college students adds to the financial woes of young people who want to continue their education. The outlook already has been bleak for many students as it has become more difficult, or impossible, to get student grants or guaranteed loans, due to federal cutbacks.

The summer job situation is a result of the high rate of unemployment at this time. It is only natural that employers would prefer recalling former workers, on a full-time basis, rather than hiring part-time.
