NORWAY – A pair of women escaped without injury Friday night after the SUV they were riding in went up in flames on Pikes Hill Road.

It happened at about 8:30 p.m., said Norway Fire Chief Dennis Yates. The woman who was driving the 2004 Dodge Dakota pulled over after smelling smoke. The women got out of the car, Yates said, and saw sparks shooting out from beneath the engine block.

A moment later, the SUV went up in flames.

“It was fully engulfed when we got there,” Yates said.

It didn’t take fire crews long to douse the flames, but the vehicles was destroyed by the flames. According to Yates, although the cause of the blaze was still being investigated, the owner of the Dodge had been having problems with the vehicle manifold and had been expecting to have work done on it.

The burned vehicle was towed to a garage and the two women, both from Oxford, arranged for a ride home. Their names were not immediately available.
