Do's & Don'ts*
1. Students should have portraits done in the summer. Most photographers deal with professional labs. And most professional labs are out of state. Keep in mind that most high schools have year book deadlines that are in October and that is nationwide. All labs get backed up and turn around time takes longer.
Odyssey of the Mind
On Saturday, April 5, the Auburn Middle School, Odyssey of the Mind team competed in the state OM competition which included developing a solution to both a long-term creative challenge and a short-term spontaneous challenge. The OM team's challenge this year was called, "The Wonderful Muses." This particular problem consists of a muse inspiring two people during this team created performance; a historical person and a team-created person. In Greek Mythology muses were the source of all inspiration for the creative works of artist and scientists. Teams are used to think creatively and construct an original skit in all problems.
AMS Drama Club present Romeo and Juliet
William Shakespeare once again visits the Auburn Middle School stage on this May when the Auburn Middle School drama club presents Shakespeare's classic romance, Romeo and Juliet.
"Leadership" By Garrett Glass Grade 7
"A leader leads his men by example, not by violence." - Sun Tzu
A Leader's Character
A leader should be brave and kind to his followers. He should be faithful to his promises. A leader should also be a servant to his people. He should be friendly.

St. Dom's French IV class organizes French Mass
St. Dominic Regional High School has a long history of French culture and heritage tied closely with its Catholic faith. The French IV class at St. Dom's decided to commemorate this by reviving the tradition of an annual French mass for the school. From the altar serving and music to the readings and responses, the class, with the help of teacher Mr. Thibodeau, coordinated all parts of the mass.
Students hold health fair at St. Dom's
On Tuesday April 8, 2008, the two Anatomy and Physiology classes at St. Dominic Regional High School held their First Annual Health Fair for all students and faculty of the school. The classes were divided into planning committees, and with the help of teacher Mrs. Pamela Kay, they organized the entire event.
Let the night begin
It was February 15 and every Saint Dom's student anxiously sat in their seats waiting for the dismissal bell to ring. There was so much to get done before the big night and not nearly enough time to do it. The girls were the first ones to rush out of the building to make sure they made it to their hair appointments on time, while the boys calmly left the building with a hidden sense of excitement for the events to come.

Baby think it overs
What is the one thing parents love the most? The answer is their children. Every parents loves, cares for, and caters to every need of their child. Now, you're probably wondering why this is called 'Baby Think it Overs' right? Well because that was the whole purpose of the experiment teens at Elm Street School learned. Each. teen had to take home a baby that weighed anywhere from six, to seven pounds. The baby had to be cared for like a real baby. Teens had to feed them, burp them, rock them, and even change their diapers. The baby also recorded everything that the teen did to neglect the baby. Yes, that means shaking baby syndrome was apart of it too! Not to mention the baby would cry when shaken not softly either! The baby can wou cry for as long as it was programmed to.
My dramatic life
Some people think that theatre is all fun and games, but it's not! Theatre takes a lot of effort, skills, and plain old talent (trust me I should know) Recently I was in two plays at the same time! Now I'm only in one play on account that the other performance is over, but that's beside the point anyways. As I was saying, theatre takes a lot of effort! For example, say your production is at a building that happens to be a little distance from your house; you have to drive all the way there for rehearsal almost every night. That's what I had to do when I was in the play "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe." Another reason, you don't get to do the things you usually do. I had to miss an important school concert, a dance (I love to dance), and I missed just kicking back and hanging out with friends. I was usually tired the next day because our rehearsal ended so late. I remember having to change my schedule and so did my mom since she had to drive me to play practice. When I say you need skills for theatre, it means you need to know how to project your voice, learn your lines, pay attention and know your quotes, and stay in character. Ahhh, talent! A very important thing. Talent, for theatre involves dancing, singing, and actually being able to act. Others believe (and I'm not implying you) that acting is just knowing your lines and acting like someone who isn't yourself. Well guess what? THEY'RE WRONG! Acting is something that comes from your heart and soul! You're not just "acting" like someone else, you're BEING someone else. You need to make the audience believe that your character is the real you! You are the character! This is what theatre is all about.
The adventure program
Recently at Elm Street School in Mechanic Falls, Maine, a military man named Joe (as the kids referred to him) came and taught a six week program on drugs and alcohol. This program is taught to the seventh grade every year at Elm Street and I know that it is also practiced at many other schools, too.
The Loathsome Lady
The Loathsome Lady is a play starring middle school students from Elm Street School in Mechanic Falls. This play is directed by Cathi Wood and is produced by Karen Downing. The students are Kaitlyn Roy, Josh Caron, Josh Girardin, Meghan Rowe, Ally Morris, Lyndsey Hollingshead, Mary McKellick, Elliot Lee, Amanda Gibson and Tanisha Elston. The play takes place, in the world of King Arthur's court back in medieval times, and was presented on April 17, in the Elm Street School gymnasium.

Time management
There is one thing that both adults and teens have a hard time doing, and that is managing their time well. Most days of the week we feel like we have to much to do and never any time to complete the task. Well there is one thing that we can all take up and that is managing our time.

Gifted & talented celebration
On Wednesday, May 21, students in the Gifted and Talented (GATE) program at Lisbon High School along with students from Edward Little, Leavitt, Lewiston and Oak Hill will be attending a Celebration of Excellence. The celebration will be held at the University of Southern Maine, Lewiston-Auburn College from 9:30 - 11:00.
Senior citizens give back to the community
For the last few weeks, retired scientists from the Maine School Science Volunteers (MSSV) program have come to Lisbon High School, volunteering their time to help the students better understand physical science. Volunteers take a training and orientation program and are then matched up with science teachers in the Middle School and High Schools throughout the state of Maine. These volunteers have many different fields that they teach which include: biochemist, chemist, physicist, medical doctor, electrical engineer, geologist, chemical engineer, mechanical engineer, marine engineer, and mathematician.
Lisbon students lose the most
As the economy falls and the price of the necessities in life rise, so do the concerns towards today's youth. The Town of Lisbon has proposed budget cuts that limit the sports, foreign language, music and art programs, teaching and educational technician positions, academic and other clubs, and a school resource officer, offered at the middle and high school levels.
LMS April artist of the month
The month of April has many exiting things going on, the coming of spring, the end of the fourth quarter, and the anouncement of the Artist of the Month! In seventh grade selected by Ms. Kate Cargile, there is Taylor Levesque, who says "Drawing is a way to get things out on paper for me. If I have a lot on my mind or just have a good idea, I like to draw." The eighth grade artist selected by Mrs. Kay Allison is Taylor Jeffreys. Taylor says "Art helps me see my accomplishments, art helps me express myself."
Camp Kieve
This is another update on some of the things the Lewiston Middle School Civil Right Team is doing. They just recently had their annual Camp Kieve camping trip. This year there was a little twist.
Charting your course
On March 10, over seven hundred kids tumbled into the Auditorium at Lewiston Middle School. We sat down to see three large screens perched on the stage. Across the screens was written Charting Your Course. After a small introduction, music blasted from the speakers and the show started. I heard bands like My Chemical Romance, Red Jumpsuit Appartus, and Avril Laviegne. Those are just a few of the many bands whose songs were in the video. Soon I felt myself singing the lyrics to the songs under my breath. I watched as clips of movies appeared on the screen and in the clips you saw characters who were making bad choices, or doubting themselves.
Geography Bee
On Friday, April 4, Ron Eastman, an eighth grade student at Lewiston Middle School, came in 3rd place for the district geography bee. The bee was held at the University of Southern Maine, Portland campus. The geography bee is like a spelling bee only with geography questions. Ron was the first person from Lewiston Middle School to go to the district bee, and it is the farthest LMS has gone in the geography bee.
LMS March Madness
As everyone knows MEAs are very important. So they put a lot of pressure on the students taking them. That's why after their MEAs are over Lewiston Middle School has their annual "March Madness," or spirit week. Spirit takes place during the week after the whole school finishes the MEAs. It is like a celebration that the MEAs are over.
March madness week
From March 17- March 20 student council provided March Madness week. On Monday we all dressed in green because it was St. Patrick's day. On Tuesday it was crazy clothes day where we mixed-matched and wore our craziest clothes. On Wednesday it was Hollywood day wear we dressed as our favorite stars and Mrs. Baker and Mrs. Ferguson went around judging who had the best costume.
Middle school drama
The drama that occurs in middle school and high school, is usually blamed on the girls. Many girls will adamantly state that this is not true. While a lot of the drama does come from the girls, the boys are not exempt. This stereotype is, though I hate to admit it, frankly, mostly true, but like I said, the boys are involved. One of my past teachers once told me that if boys have a disagreement they will simply get in a fight. This is not the best course of action to take, even if it does simplify things quite a bit. The best course of action to take, in my book, is to confront the person directly and sort it out. but while I did say it is the best course of action to take, I did not say it always works. When confronted the person has three main options.
Monmouth Mustangs do well in the Civic Center
As all of you probably know, the Monmouth Mustangs went to the Civic Center and came on to play Madison in the Championship game. Throughout the season I have always admired Monmouth as a team.
Myspace dangers
Everyone knows what Myspace is ... a great place to chat with friends and to share your best photos. But not many people are aware of the dangers that Myspace holds. Such as, if you have a Myspace you have the choice to set it on private or keep your profile public. If you choose to set your profile on private only the friends you accept can see your profile. And if you choose not to set your profile on private ANYONE can see your private and personal information such as (but does not exclude) your name, where you live, and your age. Although many people lie about their age. this could be very valuable information for online predators ... so be safe on the Interne-you never know who's looking.
Monmouth Middle School snow days
Yes, a snow day, you will say when you see your schools district with a closed sign next to it on television, hear it on the radio or look it up on the Internet. You go back to sleep and sleep a few extra hours in, before you start your day. You may watch television or play video games or do some outdoor activities. But you do know that only five days are included when you have storm cancellations. You have to think would you rather make up days in the summer? I know some people love winter and don't mind making up days in the summer. But for most people, they want to get as much out of the nice weather in summer as possible. I know that kids want breaks from school, so the school board gives us vacations. But vacations fly by to fast and we want more days off. When we have snow days we are really happy. But think about it, next time you are praying for a snow day after you have exceeded your five day limit you have to make that day up in the summer.
The sun, the hope
The months pass by one at a time. Sometimes slowly and sometimes quickly. The year has been long. Snow has continually fallen from a heavy dark sky.
Zuzu
She was large, and could frighten people not used to horses, but she was really a big teddy bear. Maybe I should explain, ZuZu was my mother's Percheron horse. She lived in our barn in our backyard with my Quarter horse Lily. About mid-January Zulu went off her feed. When a horse goes of his/her feed, you know it's serious. We took her to the veterinary clinic, and that night she passed away. My parents didn't tell me until I got home from school that day. My best friend was with me when I heard the news and we both began sobbing. That was a difficult loss for my mother and I, but my father, best friend and her mother helped us through it. They were grieving too. ZuZu will always 6e in our hearts but we know she is no longer suffering.
Billy Shakespeare
I've never been a big fan of Shakespeare. When reading his works, I would become easily confused, which would lead to my loss of interest. It was difficult to see the significance of the themes in his plays. How was I supposed to relate to two star-crossed lovers destined for tragedy, when the only tragic thing in my life was math homework over spring break? Or to a power hungry King with a habit of blood-shed, when I've never been a competitive person and being the center of attention only interested me when it involved a stage?
Monmouth Academy celebrates diversity
On Friday April 4, The DLI Civil Rights Team at Monmouth Academy held a Diversity Day. It was a day to celebrate individuality and kindness, as well as discussing issues of hurtful words and discrimination because of race, religion, sexual orientation, skin color, and/or mental illnesses.
Summertime is almost here, but so are the headaches!!!
This summer, you could be at the beach on a bright, sunny afternoon and be having an absolutely wonderful time, right? Wrong! On many occasions, the summer proves to be the worst season for headaches and migraines. Why? Read on. I will tell you everything you need to know about those pesky headaches, including what causes them and how to confront them at their source, courtesy of Women's World magazine.
A visit from the Center for the Prevention of Hate Violence
In February, staff from the Center for the Prevention of Hate Violence met with groups of students in focus groups to evaluate the frequency, form, and impact of bias and harassment at our school. Students described issues of harassment regarding gender, race, sexual orientation, religion, special education, and body size. These same categories and levels of harassment exist in most Maine schools and across the nation.
Fun week
At Philip W. Sugg Middle School in Lisbon, we celebrated the end of MEA testing by having a FUN WEEK from March 25th through March 28th. On Tuesday, there were lunchtime math challenges in the cafeteria. If students got the problems correct, they won a prize. During the week there were also volleyball and waffle ball games after school. Wednesday was beach day. Students dressed up in summer clothes and accessories. Thursday was Spring training day which celebrated the start of baseball season by wearing anything having to do with baseball. Friday was Crazy Hat Day, dance, dance revolution and Guitar Hero day. Guitar Hero is a video game played with an interactive plastic guitar. Students got the chance to play either medium, hard or expert level of the game. Two winners on each level played against each other at an assembly on Friday. Nick Cory won the medium level against Bryce King. T. J. Harrington won the hard level again Phillip Tapley, and Matt Hussey won expert level against Ben Randall. There was also a dance on Friday sponsored by the yearbook staff.
Mad scientists at Philip W. Sugg
Mrs. Marilyn Curtis has devoted her life to improving and strengthening lives of others. Mrs. Curtis currently teaches at Philip W. Sugg Middle School, and regularly extends her day to after school activities. By popular demand at PWS, Mrs. Curtis' science club benefits those students outside the athletic curriculum. Mrs. Curtis strives to include Science Club tasks that are not included in the school's syllabus. The group has worked for about six weeks on material like aerodynamics, bridge building, acids and bases, adaptations with plants, physical science and motion, and a subject of their choice. Mrs. Curtis says "the students enjoy working with material that they may not otherwise be introduced to and will definitely do the club next year. I love science because it is always changing and it helps build skills for the future. Students need to use their mind for creativity."
Time for a new president
Not only is it time for a new president for the country but, it is also time for a new president for the Philip W. Sugg Middle School's Parent Action Group (P.A.G.). The P.A.G. has had the same president for the past three years but, it is time for a change because the current president is moving on to the high school, since both of her kids will be attending high school next year.
A reflecting year
I thought it would be nice to end this Advocate year with a reflection. This is especially important to me because next year I won't be a reporter for the middle school Advocate staff. I will be at the Lisbon High School. So many great experiences have happened this year. So much has been covered by the staff for student council, sports, and personal issues. It has been such a successful year for many of our members and our Advisor, Mrs. Monica Millhime. Last year, by the end of the year, there were six on our staff. This year our staff continued to grow throughout the year.

Book Review: Sabriel
As a reader looking for a moderately challenging book to read, Sabriel seemed a perfect choice for me. I had heard that it certainly wasn't an easy read, but not necessarily extremely difficult. Sabriel is one of those books that as you get further into the plot, things become clearer. In the first chapter I was incredibly confused, but you just have to keep plugging through and eventually you'll get it.
High fructose corn syrup
If you drive by a field of cows you think of milk. You drive by a pumpkin field and a jack 'o' lanturn pops into your head. You drive by a field of corn and you think of corn on the cob. Well, that's not all that corn is used for. That's where most of your sugar comes from.
How can crying help you?
There are two different types of of tears, there's protective tears, that wash away irritants, like onions. The other type of tear is the emotional tear which can be caused by sadness or happiness. It is said that tears contain three different chemicals that the body released by the body during stress. The first chemical is Leucine-enkephalin- which is mood elevating and pain reducing endorphin. There is also ACTH which is a hormone considered to be the most reliable indicator of stress. Finally there is Prolactin, that hormone regulates milk production in mammals.
Something "Different"
I have always been intrigued by unique types of music. I am a metal, and it is the magnet. The band, Anathallo, clung to me faster than anything. Although calling Anathallo a band is quite ignorant of me. Excuse me though, because it is difficult to describe. But what would you call a group that mixes aspects of rock and roll, classical music, marching band, Japanese poetry, and tribal chants? There is no label for Anathallo.
Emmy Rossum
Are you sick of listening to the same old music? Looking for a new artist to listen to? You may be interested in Emmy Rossum, who just released a new CD, Inside Out. She is not very well known, but I believe she is an up-and-coming artist, and her voice is simply beautiful. I first found out about her from the film version of Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera. She played the lead, Christine Daae, and in my opinion, she was incredible. I've listened to quite a few songs from the new CD, and they are just as brilliant as ever.
Healthier school food now!
After a long morning, Jenny got to the lunch line only to find that none of the food was appealing. All there was was cold greasy pizza and chewy burgers. She took a slice of pizza, a bag of chips, cookies, and ice cream. She looked around, almost everyone had the same lunch, consisting of sugar and grease. At the table she watched as the grease slowly congealed on her pizza. She skipped the pizza and went right to the ice cream. During third period she felt sick. School food should be healthier because students need healthy food to help their brain function, the unhealthy school food will cause the students to gain weight, and students mood, energy levels and self-esteem would increase if they were to eat better food.
Life of a seventh grader!!
OK seventh grade is much different then elementary school.
Phones dismissed!
Kids shouldn't be allowed to have cell phones in school because students could text friends instead of paying attention in class. Second, students could be getting themselves in trouble if the phone goes off in class. Third, if students can use phones in school then whose to say they wouldn't use them to cheat on a test? Finally if students can use their cell phones other students could be bullied by either not having a phone or they could get very mean or scary text from someone they don't even know.
Ready or not
I exchange a nervous look with my friend Lucy, as we hear the high school counselor pile all this information on us, telling us things like, I recommend a study hall, or, all freshmen have to take physical science. Oh, gosh, I'm thinking. This is just too overwhelming.
