Alzheimer's conference to be held in Auburn
On Friday, May 16, the Maine Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association is hosting a statewide educational conference at the Hilton Garden Inn in Auburn. The conference theme is, "'I'm Still Here': Entering the World of the Person with Dementia" and will feature speakers Maria C. Carrillo, Ph.D, Joanne Koenig Coste and Paul Raia, Ph.D, as well as workshops.
Law school applicants accepted at higher than average rate
Bates College seniors and alumni who applied to law schools for matriculation in autumn 2007 enjoyed a 74 percent acceptance rate, vs. the national average of 66 percent.

Local Civil Air Patrol pilots attend training
The Maine Civil Air Patrol Wing mission pilots recently flew to Providence, R.I., to attend a Civil Air Patrol air defense training class on homeland security. Mission pilots from Maine to New Jersey attended the class.
Christian academy students take honors
Central Maine Christian Academy students, grades five and up, recently participated in a statewide academic day at Bangor Christian School. The event involving seven Christian schools included competitions in music, math, art and science. The students chosen to take part had received top scores in math, science, music and art competitions at CMCA.
Summer session to begin at Central Maine Community College
Central Maine Community College will begin its annual summer session with the first courses starting the week of May 12 and ending the week of June 30. Most classes meet twice a week (Tuesday/Thursday or Monday/Wednesday), and there are still openings in a number of classes. All courses carry three college credits, which can be applied to a program at CM or another accredited college or university.
Tom Rowe benefit concert on May 10
On Saturday, May 10, at 7:30 p.m. the Franco-American Heritage Center will come alive with the legacy of Maine folk musician, Tom Rowe. This year marks the fourth annual Remembering Tom Rowe, A Celebration in Song concert to benefit the Maine Cancer Foundation.

Auburn's Mark A. Coursey Named USM's 2008 Student Commencement Speaker
Mark A. Coursey of Auburn will be the student commencement speaker at the University of Southern Maine's 128th Commencement on Saturday, May 10, in the Cumberland County Civic Center, Portland. Coursey will graduate from USM with a degree in leadership and organizational studies. Roger Wilkins, who shared a Pulitzer Prize in 1972 for Watergate coverage with Bob Woodward, Carl Bernstein and Herb (Herblock) Block, will give the commencement address. It is expected that 1,000 graduates will march at the ceremony.
Dine around for heart-health fundraiser
In celebration of its fifth anniversary, the Central Maine Heart and Vascular Institute is partnering with Lewiston-Auburn area restaurants to present "A Taste of the Twin Cities," a fundraiser for the American Heart Association that will feature heart healthy fare.

Kids learn skills from the skillet
Auburn Middle School has several after-school programs, all designed to encourage good study habits, exercise and peer interaction. Students can choose to go one, two or three days a week, but must attend the study hour prior to participating in any activities. Due to limited space, those who sign up for activities are encouraged to attend each week to avoid losing their spot. On Wednesday, April 29, the students in Sous Chef, taught by school resource officer Tom Poulin, held its last class of the session. It was a big event, as each student invited two people each and they prepared a five course meal with recipes that they voted on each week.
Stanton club plans trip to Evergreen Cemetery
Several varieties of warblers will be the center of interest for participants of the field trip sponsored by the Stanton Bird Club on Saturday, May 10. Portland's Evergreen Cemetery will be the destination.
Doctor visits State House
State Rep. Mike Beaulieu, R-Auburn, stands with Auburn residents Dr. Carla Burkley and her daughter, Emily Talpey, in the House chamber, April 14. Dr. Burkley, who specializes in obstetrics and gynecology at St. Mary's Regional Medical Center in Lewiston, had the honor of serving as Doctor of the Day for Monday's session. Emily, who is student at Park Avenue Elementary School, served as an honorary legislative page, delivering messages and documents to members of the House.

The Philips iU22 features 4D (or, real-time 3D) imaging technology that allows patients to view the fetus and internal organs as if they were being held in the hands. The system's powerful imaging capabilities support a variety of common exams, including vascular, thyroid, and testicular exams. It also offers advanced imaging capabilities specifically beneficial in the evaluation of breast masses.

Women in Harmony present "How Can I Keep From Singing"
Women in Harmony, a chorus of women's voices dedicated to the power of music to further social justice, presents "How Can I Keep from Singing," a concert of choral music, Saturday, May 10, at 7 p.m. and Sunday, May 11, at 2 p.m. Saturday's concert will take place at State Street church in Portland, while Sunday's performance will be held at the Franco-American Heritage Center in Lewiston. This season's concerts will once again be led by Music Director Catherine Beller-McKenna, with piano accompaniment by Deana Ingraham Gurney.
