PORTLAND — Mainers young and old will have the opportunity to experience more than 80 fun-filled winter activities around the state during the Great Maine Outdoor Weekend, to be held March 2-4. The Great Maine Outdoor Weekend is organized by the newly formed Maine Outdoor Coalition, a group of organizations and companies working together to connect Mainers to the outdoors.
“Our goal is to connect friends and neighbors with the beauty and natural resources of our great state while promoting fun, physical activity and good health,” said coalition member Lindsay Bourgoine of the Appalachian Mountain Club. “We’re fortunate to have many organizations and companies eager to encourage people to get outside and take advantage of all Maine has to offer.”
Great Maine Outdoor Weekend events will take place in every county throughout Maine and offer a mix of traditional and unconventional winter activities, most of which are free and at an introductory level. Participants can enjoy snowshoeing, winter hiking and cross-country skiing, or try their hand at something a bit more out of the ordinary such as snowmobile golf, an air-rifle biathlon, digging for winter steamers or spending an evening with owls.
Coalition member Warren Whitney of Maine Coast Heritage Trust encouraged many Maine land trusts to join in the Great Maine Outdoor Weekend because it helps residents get acquainted with the conserved lands in their communities. “This weekend offers a chance to celebrate our connections to the natural world,” said Whitney, “and introduce young people to outdoor pursuits so they become good stewards of place.”
