Alleged burglar to undergo surgery after 3rd-story jump

AUBURN — Police arrested a Lewiston man whom they believe broke into more than a dozen homes in New Auburn over the past two weeks.

He was released Tuesday morning from Androscoggin County Jail to undergo surgery for injuries he sustained a week ago when he jumped from the third story of one of the homes.

On Monday, Auburn police detectives interviewed Philip Charest, 28, in New Auburn where he had been staying with friends. He confessed to burglarizing 13 homes during daytime hours, police said. He was twice interrupted by homeowners during the break-ins.

Charest was later arrested by Lewiston police on outstanding warrants stemming from Lewiston burglaries. He was released on personal recognizance to go to the hospital.
