Alyce A. Smith


FARMINGTON – Alyce A. Smith, 98, passed away on Saturday, May 6, at the Sandy River Nursing Care Center.

She was born on Dec. 16, 1907, in Stratton, the daughter of Grover C. Leighton and Gladys (Stevens) Leighton. She was educated in Stratton schools. She married Lewis Smith Sr. and he predeceased her.

She started out preparing and cooking meals for the men that worked in the woods for her husband, Lewis Smith and Floyd Mitchell. She then worked a number of years at the B.F.D. Mill in Phillips. Then she worked for the Livermore Falls Shoe Co., in Livermore Falls for four years. She also spent part of her life as a homemaker.

She enjoyed knitting, reading, listening to music, her flowers, gardening and most of all crocheting. She also enjoyed going to their camp in Stratton.

She is survived by one daughter, Barbara Smith Berry and her husband, Larry, of Industry; two brothers, Lewis Smith and his wife, Geraldine, of Farmington and William Smith of Willa, Alaska; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by one brother, Bion Leighton.
