Annual Letters for Literacy Scrabble Fest spells success


AUBURN – One hundred people gathered in the Hilton Ballroom on April 23 to share an afternoon of Scrabble team competition and raise money for Literacy Volunteers.

Players formed four-person teams and collected pledges in order to participate.

Approximately $5,000 was raised to provide literacy services for adults and children in Androscoggin County.

Top fundraisers were awarded original watercolors by artists Sandy Nyberg and Annette Lavallee, as well as other prizes donated by local businesses. This year’s champion fundraisers were Roger Girardin; Marty Corey; the Sun Journal team of Justin Pelletier, Megan Levy, Susan Fourness and Keith Hagel; Theresa Holden; Mary Ann Delsandro; Bonnie Shulman; Judi Moreno; Annie Lunt; the Scrabbling Scrabblers with members Chris and Kathy Bryant, Lynn and Gary Knight; Marjorie Howe; and Nancy Dewing.

Overseeing the competition were celebrity judges John Jenkins of Pep Talk and Amy Parker of the Career Center.

This year’s champions in the pro category were “The Letters,” Roger Girardin, Mike Girardin, Jared Girardin and Pat Roy. Coming in a close second in the pro division were the crew from the Auburn Public Library, with the Lewiston Sun Journal team placing third. In the social category, the “Gummi Bears:” Judi Moreno, Dan Moreno, Sandy Nyberg, and Peter Letourneau, won, followed by “All Aboard,” and the “Two-tors.”
