LEWISTON — The members of Mu, the local chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma International, will host their annual Teddy Bear Fair on Saturday, Nov. 13, at the Lewiston High School gym.
The fair is the major fundraising event for the chapter, whose members are all current or retired educators from the Lewiston-Auburn area. The fair will feature craft tables with knitted items, handmade jewelry as well as sewn and painted decorations; a baked goods table; a used book table with CDs and DVDs; a baked beans table with biscuits and brown bread; a white elephant table with gently used treasures of all kinds; a raffle table with gift certificates for gas and lobster, a hand assembled quilt and an Adirondack chair; a harvest table with gourds, pickles, vinegars, jams, jellies and salsas; and a Teddy Bear table with gently loved stuffed animals.
There will also be a lunch counter with sandwiches and snacks. The ladies of Mu have made and donated all items to raise funds for their many community service projects.
Mu provides the first book to all babies born in the Twin City hospitals with a brochure that explains how important it is to read to children from birth. The chapter also adopts several local families for Christmas and provide gifts for all members of the family as well as a basket for a Christmas meal.
They donate gift bags to all shut-ins at local nursing homes who have ever worked in schools. They also provide scholarships to members who are advancing their educational status and to a local student who is studying to become an educator. In the spring, Mu hosts a reception honoring all retired educators in the area with a homemade dessert and entertainment.
