PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — One of the four Democratic gubernatorial candidates says he wants a smaller Legislature but longer terms for those who serve.
Patrick McGowan said Tuesday his proposal would save millions of dollars and make government more efficient while reducing the burden of lengthy campaign seasons.
He proposes cutting the size of the state House and Senate by about one third, from 186 down to 123. He also proposes increasing legislative terms to four instead of two years, and letting lawmakers serve a maximum of 12 rather than eight consecutive years.
Similar proposals have come up in past years but have been rejected by lawmakers.
McGowan also wants rules to reduce the number of bills allowed per session and to make legislative sessions shorter.

" . . ...Thomas was nominated by Bush to fill Marshall's seat on the United States Supreme Court. Thomas's confirmation hearings were bitter and intensely fought, centering on an accusation that he had made unwelcome sexual comments to attorney Anita Hill, a subordinate at the Department of Education and subsequently at the EEOC. The U.S. Senate ultimately confirmed Thomas by a vote of 52–48. " C st la vie , h t h , Steve :)
