AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — Gov. Paul LePage is naming Mary Mahew, former vice president of the Maine Hospital Association, as his nominee for commissioner of the state Department of Health and Human Services.

The governor also announced Wednesday that dairy farmer Walter Whitcomb, a former Republican leader in the Maine House of Representatives, is his choice to head the Department of Agriculture.

Mayhew was recently appointed to LePage's staff as a health policy adviser. Previously, she was vice president of the hospital association.

If confirmed by the Legislature, Mahew will oversee one of the state's largest and most complex departments, which administers MaineCare, the nutrition program formerly known as food stamps, and numerous other welfare and social services in which hundreds of thousands of Mainers are enrolled.
