Auburn Middle School assistant principal sentenced for OUI

AUBURN — Middle School Assistant Principal Kevin Shaw was fined $1,500 and handed a 210-day license suspension Wednesday, two weeks after he was convicted of driving while intoxicated and leaving the scene of an accident.

Shaw, 48, of Minot was also ordered to serve four days of alternative sentencing, which typically involves community service.

On Dec. 13, a jury in Androscoggin County Superior Court found Shaw guilty on both charges after a two-day trial.

He was accused of crashing into a plow truck on Route 119 in Minot on March 24 and fleeing from the scene. His bumper and license plate were knocked from his car in the crash, according to court reports. Police later tracked down Shaw at his home and charged him.

Neither he nor his three passengers were hurt.

Shaw had faced up to 364 days in jail on the OUI charge after a jury found him guilty of an enhanced version of that charge because it had been determined Shaw’s blood-alcohol level was 0.15 percent or greater at the time of the crash — nearly twice the legal threshold of 0.08 percent.

At Superior Court on Wednesday, Shaw was handed the four-day alternative sentence, a $1,000 fine and a 150-day license suspension on the OUI charge. For leaving the scene of an accident, he was fined $500 and his license was suspended for an additional 60 days.

Shaw had remained free, driving with a restricted license, before he was sentenced. His future at Auburn Middle School remained unclear. After Shaw was convicted of the charges earlier this month, Auburn Schools Superintendent Katy Grondin said Shaw remained a faculty member in good standing.

Shaw has worked in the local school district for more than 20 years.

“I’m confident that he has taken the necessary steps to make sure that something like this doesn’t happen again,” Grondin said.
