AUBURN – Air Force Maj. Christian F. Lichter has been decorated with the Distinguished Flying Cross Medal with the bronze “V” device awarded for valor.

The medal is awarded to any person who, while serving in any capacity with the Armed Forces of the United States, distinguishes himself or herself by heroism or extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight.

The performance of the act of heroism must be evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty. The extraordinary achievement must have resulted in an accomplishment so exceptional and outstanding as to clearly set the individual apart from his/her peers or from other persons in similar circumstances.

Lichter was awarded the medal with valor device for participating in military operations, which resulted in the recovery of a U.S. Special Operations Command service member in eastern Afghanistan.

He is a pilot/instructor pilot assigned to the U.S. Air Force Special Operations Command deployed to the U.S. Central Command theater of operations in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

The major is the son of the late Dr. Horacio and Joan Lichter, formerly of Maple Hill Road, Auburn. He graduated in 1988 from Edward Little High School and received a master’s degree in 2005 from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Daytona Beach, Fla.
