Auburn Public Library announces events for May

AUBURN — Auburn Public Library has announced the following events for the month of May. The library will be closed on Monday, May 30, in observance of Memorial Day.

Prime Time Tuesdays, 2 p.m. in the Androscoggin Community Room. PrimeTime Tuesdays programs are especially for adults ages 50 and over, but all are invited to join.

May 3 will be “Sailing the Mediterranean Sea, Summer of 76 with June Spear.” Senior College instructor June Spear recounts sailing the Mediterranean Sea, with a shipload of British citizens.

May 10 will be the classic film series, featuring “The Unsinkable Mollie Brown (1964),” starring Debbie Reynolds. Admission is 50 cents and includes popcorn and punch.

Brown Bag programs, noon to 1 p.m. Free. Bring a bagged lunch if you like (or order out at The Library Cafe).

Wednesday, May 4: Live music hour with Michael Krapovicky in the Grand Reading Room. 

Thursday, May 5: Belly dancing with Imary in the Androscoggin Community Room.

Wednesday, May 11: Book discussion, “Just Kids” by Patti Smith. No registration is required. For help borrowing a copy of the book through the online requesting system, contact the Lending Services Desk at 333-6640 ext. 2.

Thursday, May 12: Author visit, “The Foremost Good Fortune” with Portland resident Susan Conley in the Androscoggin Community Room. Copies of the book will be available for signing and purchase.

Thursday, May 19: Author visit, “Battling Bipolar Disorder, A Memoir” with Auburn resident Christina Solak-Goodwin in the Androscoggin Community Room. Copies of the book will be available for signing and purchase. 

Wednesday, May 25: Live music hour with Neil James in the Grand Reading Room.

Workshop: Computers Searching For Savvy Seniors: Alternative Medicine from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday, May 19, in the computer lab. Information on yoga, tai chi, meditation, acupuncture, vitamin D, calcium, and fish oil abounds on the Internet, but how do we know if that information is accurate? Join us today when we demonstrate websites that provide reliable information on alternative and complementary. Instructors will be Michelle Eberle and Sabrina Kurtz-Rossi of the National Libraries of Medicine, New England Region. Fiction Book Discussion Group: “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday, May 19, in the Prime Time space on the 1st floor. On the third Thursday of each month, APL staffer Deb Erickson leads a discussion of a recent popular fiction book. No registration is required. Workshop: Job Search Skills, from 2 to 4 p.m. Monday, May 23, in the Library conference room. This workshop is presented by the Lewiston Career Center and Auburn Public Library. A program about Job Corps in Maine will be presented for teens and young adults (ages 16-24) from 10 a.m. to noon or from 3 to 4 p.m. Wednesday, May 25, in the Androscoggin Community Room.
