AUGUSTA — Police say a Maine man who spent 17 years in prison for raping and strangling a 14-year-old girl is back in custody following a standoff in Augusta.
Police said 45-year-old Lorne Sherwood was arrested Tuesday around noon and charged with assault, terrorizing and creating a police standoff. Police obtained an arrest warrant after he allegedly assaulted a woman on Monday.
Deputy Police Chief Jared Mills described Sherwood to the Kennebec Journal as a “very dangerous individual.”
Sherwood was 27 and living in Biddeford at the time of the 1995 abduction, rape and beating of a 14-year-old girl in Biddeford whom he grabbed off the street at random. He pleaded guilty to a dozen charges in that case in 1996.
