Author to discuss book at society meeting

RANGELEY – The Rangeley Lakes Region Historical Society will hold its annual meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 18, at the Congregational Church barn.

Following a short business meeting and election of officers, Stephen Cole will discuss and sign copies of his new book, “The Rangeley and Its Region: The Famous Boat and Lakes of the Western Maine.”

Since the mid-1800s sportsmen have visited the Rangeley region to pursue the trophy brook trout. As demand for guides and camps increased, there evolved in the 1870s the now famous Rangeley Boat, a double-ended boat that is lightweight, stylish and easy to row, a favorite of local guides.

“The Rangeley and Its Region” tells how the boat, people, town, lakes and economy became inseparable over the years. It includes nearly 100 early photos and covers fly fishing, rod building, fly tying, boat building, guiding and the era of the “big hotels.” The public is invited.
