BANGOR (AP) – A gift valued at $1.5 million to Husson College for a new education center in eastern Maine is the largest single donation ever received by the Bangor-based college, Gov. John Baldacci said Monday, thanking the donors.

The donation, which comes in the form of property and annual grants, is from Sidney and Nancy Unobskey of Maine and California and will help to establish the Unobskey Education Center in Calais.

Through the Unobskey Education Center, Husson plans to offer graduates of Washington County Community College a transfer to Husson, potentially leading to graduate degrees. Students in Washington County could earn graduate degrees without having to leave Calais.

Baldacci said the Unobskeys’ gift creates new opportunities for the eastern Maine county’s residents.

“This is a wonderful example of public and private collaboration for rural Maine and it develops international opportunities and cooperation,” the governor said.

Husson, Bangor Theological Seminary, the New England School of Communications and University College of the University of Maine System all plan to use the facility.

Sidney Unobskey was born in St. Stephen, New Brunswick, and raised in Calais. Sidney and Nancy Unobskey currently reside in San Francisco and Robbinston, Maine.
