AUBURN — Barbara Ann Verrill, 78, of New Gloucester, died at Clover Manor Nursing Home, Jan. 9, with her loving family at her side, following a long illness.
She was born in Lewiston, Dec. 1, 1934, to parents, Hubert and Ruby Strout. Barbara graduated from Lewiston High School and was married to Howard Merritt Verrill on Aug. 9, 1953.
Barbara was well-known in the community of New Gloucester. She provided childcare for many years and was a volunteer with the New Gloucester Food Co-op program. She was awarded the Amvets Community Service Award for her involvement with children and families in local and school sports programs. Over the years, Barbara was also involved in the Busy Bees, the University of Maine’s Evening Extension Group, the Memorial School’s PTA and was a favored “room mother” for many classrooms at Memorial School, where all of her nine children received their elementary education. Barbara will be most remembered for her time spent with family providing Sunday dinners and summer cookouts and hosting major family events.
Barbara is survived by her husband, Howard Verrill; her children, Angie Maschino (George), David Verrill (Susan), Nancy Verrill (Stephen Pufhal), Donald Verrill, Jane Yeaton (Chuck Stone), Ann Ryan (Robert), Mary Verrill, Peter Verrill (Beth) and Catherine Verrill (Beth Piper); 23 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her parents; and sister, Ruth Morrison.
