SANFORD — Barbara Demeritt Soucy, 72, passed from this world into the loving arms of her Lord and Savior on Sunday, Feb. 28, at Goodall Hospital, surrounded by her loving family.

Formerly of Rumford, she was born on Dec. 28, 1937, the daughter of Clayton and Roxie Demeritt of West Peru. She attended Peru Elementary School and graduated from Stephens High School, Class of 1957, where she met and later married Lambert Soucy on June 3, 1961.

During her children’s grammar and high school years, she worked part-time as a baker for the local school department, giving her the time off she needed to raise and nurture her family. In 1980, she lost her partner and love of her life, Lambert, to cancer and although devastated, the Lord gave her the strength she needed to comfort their four children, giving of herself unselfishly throughout the rest of their formative years. After her husband’s passing, she worked full time at the local Rumford paper mill to support her family. Upon retirement, she relocated to Alfred, to be close to her daughter and grandchildren.

She will always be remembered for her caring and nurturing ways, her gentleness and her totally unselfish heart. She was so loved as a wife, mom, sister, Nana, aunt and friend.

Her grandchildren thought of their nana not only as a grandmother, but often as a playmate, confidante and friend. She became whatever her grandchildren needed her to be at any given moment, whether it be a makeup model, a tea party guest, or playmate to play with trains and little toy cars. As the grandchildren grew, she became the taxi driver, drivers ed instructor and relationship counselor, always with a listening ear and words of wisdom spoken ever so gently.

She is survived by her two daughters, Kathleen (Kevin) Briggette of Alfred and Cynthia (Jeff) Taylor of Lewiston; her son, Kevin (Brenda) Soucy of Delanson, N.Y.; nine grandchildren, Laura, Christopher and Magen Briggette, Grace and Elijah Taylor, Alisha, Madison and Stephen Soucy and Danica St. Germain; her two sisters, Sandra Richards and Darlene Demeritt; and her brother, Duane Demeritt.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Lambert Soucy in 1980; and her eldest son, Armand Soucy in 2003.
