GREENE — A memorial service of remembrance honoring the life of Barbara Sawyer Nelson was held Saturday afternoon at the Sawyer Memorial Building with the Rev. Philip Shearman presiding. Words of remembrance were shared by the following family members: Leslie Bascom, Laura Sawyer, Betty Sawyer, Terry Norman,and then both Kurt Norman and Mark Norman read poems in honor of Barbara. Pianist Phil House played the following selections, “This Is My Father’s World,” “There’s a Mansion Over the Hilltop,” “A Yellow Rose from Texas” and “My Country ’tis of Thee.”
Services concluded with the United States Army Honor Detail playing taps and then presenting our country’s flag to Barbara’s great-great-grandnephew, Alec Norman, for services rendered by his great-aunt Barbara during World War II. All were then invited to a reception of fellowship in the Sawyer Memorial Building Hall. Burial was held privately in the Sawyer family plot at Valley Cemetery, Greene.
