Bates stops Bridgewater St.


WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – Bates held off a second-half comeback by Bridgewater State to record a 57-49 women’s basketball victory in the opening game of the Willians College Winter Classic.

Val Beckwith led the Bobcats (7-4) with a game-high 17 points and seven rebounds. Matia Kostakis chipped in with 15 points and 11 rebounds for her seventh double-double of the season, while Lauren Yanofsky added 11 points.

Bridgewater State (5-5) was paced by Colleen Feeney and Justin Farroba with 13 points apiece.

Bowdoin 64, Union 43

BRUNSWICK – Eileen Flaherty netted a game-high 23 points to lead Bowdoin to a 64-43 victory over Union in opening-round of the Springfield College/Naismith Classic.

The Polar Bears (9-0) closed the first half with a 17-5 run to take a 35-17 advantage at intermission. Bowdoin extended its lead to as many as 24 points in the second stanza.

Jill Anelauskas chipped in for Bowdoin with 12 points, while Union (2-5) was paced by Devon Ciliberto and Michelle Rogers with seven points apiece.


USM 7, Plymouth St. 1

GORHAM – David Beckles stopped 21 shots and seven different players scored to lead Southern Maine to a 7-1 victory over Plymouth State.

The win lifted the Huskies’ record to 6-4-0. Plymouth State dropped its fourth straight game to fall to 3-8-1.
