Beavers settle for split Baseball


FARMINGTON – The University of Maine at Farmington softball team handed Bowdoin its seventh-straight loss, 11-9, in the opening game of a doubleheader, but the Polar Bears snapped the skid with a 9-3 win in the nightcap Friday.

Freshman catcher Alison Coleman had seven hits and 10 RBIs in the two games for Bowdoin (16-22)

The Beavers scored six runs in the fourth inning of the first game to take an 8-3 lead. Coleman went 4-for-4 with a home run and five RBIs for the Polar Bears, but the Polar Bears could not get ahead in the late innings. Mary Berry had a double for UMF.

Karen Reni struck out seven and allowed two earned runs to shut down the Beavers in the second game, and Coleman added her second moonshot of the day, going 3-for-4 in the game with five more RBIs. Meagan Carman was tagged with the loss for UMF (21-10).

Bowdoin 15, Bates 2

BRUNSWICK – Jared Lemieux scored three runs and belted a grand-slam in the seventh to lead Bowdoin to a 15-2 victory over Bates College in baseball action on Friday.

Lemieux’s hit made him the school’s all-time hits leader. Starting pitcher Trevor Powers pitched a complete game with seven strikeouts to pick up his 19th career win, which tied the school record.

Brian Buckley went 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI for the Bobcats (10-14).
