Benjamin A. ‘Al’ Bowerman Jr.

LIVERMORE — Benjamin Albert “Al” Bowerman Jr., 79, passed away on Jan. 30, at his home surrounded by loved ones after several years of declining health.

He was born Nov. 23, 1932, in Oklahoma City, Okla., the son of Benjamin Albert and Myrtle Holiday Bowerman. Al’s childhood was spent in Falmouth, Mass., and Gorham, N.H., as well as Windham, where he was a 1950 graduate of Windham High School. He attended the University of Maine at Orono, where he graduated with a degree in Business and Accounting.

In 1954, Al married his college sweetheart, Muriel Elise Marcou of Livermore Falls. They were the last couple to be married in the First Baptist Church of Livermore Falls by the Rev. F. Stewart Kinley before his retirement.

Al joined the U.S. Army, studying at the Army language school in Monterey, Calif., where he became fluent in German. He then served in the Army Security Agency in Frankfurt, Germany. He and Muriel with their infant son, Mike, enjoyed touring Germany and the surrounding countries while stationed there. Upon returning to the states, he began his career in 1958 with IP as an accountant at the Otis Mill.

During his career with IP, he held various positions including Administrative Director of Hudson River Mill in Corinth, N.Y., and Controller of Androscoggin Mill in Jay. He retired in 1989 and was a member of the Quarter Century Club.

Al enjoyed participating in volunteer and civic activities in Livermore and Livermore Falls. He served as a member of the SAD 36 School Board and the Livermore Falls Jaycees, as well as working with the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts prior to the family’s relocation to New York.

In 1976, after the family moved to Livermore, he served for 16 years on the town Planning Board as well as spending time on the Board of Appeals, Solid Waste Board and Budget Committee.

During retirement, Al enjoyed designing and crafting fine furniture in his home workshop. His many beautiful pieces will be lasting heirlooms for his family and the Livermore/Livermore Falls Historical Society.

He also enjoyed reading, hunting and fishing, bird-watching and other outdoor activities. He also maintained an active interest in his sons’ and grandchildren’s lives and was very proud of them, looking forward to their visits and time together.

Al leaves his wife of 58 years, Muriel; two sons and their families, Michael E. Bowerman, his wife, Nancy and their children, Stewart and Andrew Bowerman; Susanna and her husband, Kyle Wood, who all reside in Seattle, Wash.; and Robert J. Bowerman and his wife, Robin, along with their children, Elisabeth and Zachary live in West Falmouth, Mass.; and several cousins throughout the U.S.

Al was predeceased by his parents; and younger brother, Thomas S. Bowerman.
