Berlin, N.H., fires wreak havoc


BERLIN, N.H. (AP) – A fire destroyed four apartment buildings on Main Street and spread to two others, while another fire damaged a steel plant on the other side of town, fire officials said Tuesday night.

An undetermined number of people were evacuated from the buildings. There was no immediate word of any deaths or injuries.

The apartment fires started about 10:30 p.m., Berlin Fire Department Lt. Bill Maddalena said. Meanwhile, on the other side of town, firefighters were working on another fire at the Isaacson Steel plant, he said. Firefighters from Gorham were called in .

“We’re drawing so much water from the city right now,” Maddalena said.

It was not known what caused the fires.
