Bernice A. Smith


WINDHAM – Bernice A. Smith, 69, a resident of Windham, died Thursday, April 13, at her home surrounded by her loving family, after a courageous battle with Leukemia.

She was born in Jay on July 4, 1936, the daughter of Roland and Carmen Berube LeClair. She was a 1954 graduate of Jay High School. On Nov. 24, 1956, she married David P. Smith at St. Rose of Lima Church in Jay. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and homemaker who cherished her time raising her children.

She was a very family oriented person. She had worked as a dental assistant in Portland and Waterville, retiring in 1997. She was a member of the Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Windham. She enjoyed knitting, having made 19 afghans for her grandchildren, her sisters’ children and many friends.

She also enjoyed gardening, sewing and baking. She had worked at Elegant Traditions in Portland, where she altered wedding gowns. She also looked forward to their winters in Florida and was an avid Nascar fan. She often expressed words of wisdom and life lessons to her family.

She is survived by her husband of Windham; three daughters, Diane Handcock and her husband, Stephen, of Cumberland, Sharon Little and her husband, Jon, of Westbrook and Carol Bowie and her husband, Timothy, of Kannapolis, N.C.; and a son, Daniel of Windham; 10 grandchildren, Caitlin Handcock, Brittany Handcock, Eric Little, Brian Little, Dustin Smith, Shea Smith, Brandon Bowie and his wife, Stacey, Joshua Bowie, Randi Lyn Bowie and Ethan Bowie; a sister, Pauline Hogan Roy and her husband, Robert, of Jay; and a brother, Normand LeClair and his wife, Cathy, of Jay.
