Betty M. Neil

ARIZONA – Betty M. Neil passed away on June 11, with family at her side at home in Arizona.

She was born in 1932 in Maine, a daughter of the late Leon W. and Thelma M. Abbot. She graduated from Norway High School and received a bachelor of science degree from Farmington Teachers College.

After a long teaching career in South Portland public schools, she retired in 1988. In the 1940s she was very active in church youth groups and often reminisced about the friendships she made while attending meetings in parishes around Maine.

She was a member of the Maine Retired Teachers Association, Maine Education Association and National Education Association. She is remembered as warm, kind, generous of time and spirit, always with a positive attitude and smile and ready to help anyone in need.

She enjoyed her family, reading, knitting and the pet dogs that shared life with her family. She was a keen observer and lover of the natural world. She sponsored a child in Nepal through Save the Children. She will be sadly missed by everyone who knew her.

She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Norman Jr. of Arizona; daughter, Karen Neil Sauber, and son-in-law, Michael Sauber, of New Mexico; sister, Shirley Grover; nieces, Joan McDaniel, Patti Toothaker (David) and Linda Lenberg; several grand and great-grandnieces and nephews, all of Maine; Marjorie Neil of New York; and lifelong friends, Rosa and Don Lee of South Carolina.
