RUMFORD — A bicycle rodeo, bounce tent and chicken barbecue presented by Rumford firefighters have been added to this weekend’s Mountain Valley Kids Fest Child Advocacy Day.

The Rumford Eagles will host the annual event Saturday, May 7.

This year’s festival is expected to be larger and better than in previous years, Fred Allen of the Eagles said recently.

“This will be an educational as well as a fun-filled day for both youths and the adults,” Allen said Monday.

Presentations will be provided from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. by representatives from local police, medical and fire departments, along with groups from the Greater Rumford Community Center, Oxford County Sheriff’s Office, Mexico Recreation Department, Rumford Community Hospital, RSU 10’s Wellness Team and other youth groups.

Allen said Monday that among the programs offered are the police department’s Child Identification Program, in which eye retina scanning is done, and all-terrain vehicle safety. The Fire Department will demonstrate how to use the 911 system in emergencies using an interactive phone.

Rumford police will also give a safety talk after the bike rodeo, with free helmets for children while supplies and sizes last.

There will also be games, prizes, face painting and the bounce tent donated by TW Lawn Care.

The chicken barbecue starts at 11 a.m. and continues until sold out, Allen said.

After 2 p.m., there will be a WII Playstation set up on the big screen with an opportunity to win prizes.

From 8 p.m. to midnight, adult entertainment will be provided by the Hooligans. The dance costs $5, although there is no charge for Eagle members with cards.

Allen said the day is also a fundraiser for participating youth groups: GRCC, Mexico Rec, RSU 10’s Wellness Team, Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Explorers, Area Youth Football, Area Youth Cheerleaders, and Area Youth Ministry.

Throughout the day, there will be various fundraising activities with tables set up for donated raffle items, hot dog sales, 50/50 and admission for the evening entertainment.

Allen said all money raised will be divided evenly among all of the participating youth groups.
