Blaze destroys part of vacant mill

AUGUSTA (AP) – A predawn fire Monday destroyed a section of a vacant paper mill along the Kennebec River.

No injuries were reported in the fire that started around midnight at the former American Tissue Co. mill, which ceased operations in 2000.

Fire Chief Roger Audette said the flames destroyed a two-story wood-frame section that housed the mill’s offices and made up roughly 10 percent of the mill complex.

About 60 firefighters battled the flames, which were brought under control in two hours.

Investigators from the state fire marshal’s office and Augusta fire officials were seeking to determine the cause.
