PORTLAND — World-class acoustic blues guitarist Guy Davis will play and perform excerpts from his one-man theatrical production on Friday, March 2, at One Longfellow Square.
Davis’ his new double-CD set, “The Adventures of Fishy Waters: In Bed With the Blues,” introduces music fans to the one-man play he wrote and has performed to critical acclaim.
“The Adventures of Fishy Waters” features original compositions by Davis, as well as songs by such blues icons as Robert Johnson, Reverend Gary Davis, Blind Willie McTell and Big Bill Broonzy.
The album (and the play) is a “road story” in the truest sense. Davis performs stories and songs as Fishy Waters, who travels via boxcar throughout 1930s America, meeting a host of characters. These stories are at times humorous and playful, at others mysterious and powerful.
Davis has an extensive theatrical resume, including the Broadway production of “Mulebone.” He also performed at the prestigious Crossroads Theater with his parents, Ruby Dee and Ossie Davis, in a production of “Two Ha Ha’s and a Homeboy.”
“There is no tale so tall I cannot tell it, nor song so sweet I cannot sing it, ” Davis has stated.
Tickets to the 8 p.m. performance, also featuring Amy Black, are $17 advance/$20 at the door. One Longfellow Square is at 181 State St.
