Boats collide: 1 dead, 3 injured

OLD SAYBROOK, Conn. (AP) – A powerboat and a sailboat collided on the Connecticut River Sunday afternoon, killing one person and injuring three others, authorities said.

The accident happened just before 4 p.m. near Long Island Sound, said Dennis Schain, a spokesman for the state Department of Environmental Protection. He said one person on the sailboat died and three others were taken to area hospitals.

The 20-foot powerboat was apparently abandoned when the vessels collided. The operator was pulled from the water and charged with reckless operation while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, Schain said.

The cause of the crash and other details remained under investigation Sunday evening. The names of the people involved were not released.

Both boats were towed to a nearby marina. The DEP, state police, Coast Guard and Old Saybrook police were at the scene.

“Everyone’s looking into it right now to see exactly how it happened on this holiday weekend,” said Sgt. Thomas Bull of the DEP.

“We know there’s a lot of boating traffic, a lot of people enjoying the waterways, so we’re trying to get to the bottom of it now.”
