Body in barrel pulled from river

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (AP) – A body was found Wednesday stuffed inside a 55-gallon drum that had been floating in the Pequonnock River, police said.

The police department’s harbor unit recovered the drum at about 2 p.m after finding it floating east of the Stratford Avenue Bridge, police Lt. James Viadero said.

Officers noticed a strong smell coming from the barrel, and when they looked inside discovered most of a human body, Viadero said. The body’s feet were missing, he said.

Authorities could not tell whether the remains belonged to a man or a woman, he said.

The body was sent to the state medical examiner’s office in an attempt to determine a cause of death and the victim’s identity.
