Bowdoin ships snacks to local Marine

BRUNSWICK- The Bowdoin College Dining Service packed up a special “care package” for a Bowdoin student serving with the U.S. Marine Corps in Iraq.

The package was assembled by dining service staff and Bowdoin students on May 23 and shipped to Iraq.

The package, which included 50 cans of tuna, mayonnaise, whole wheat crackers, Maine blueberries, Maine maple syrup, Moxie, chocolate bars and the dining service’s own homemade “Bowdoin Peace Granola,” along with a Bowdoin Dining Service apron and a Bowdoin T-shirt, was sent to Marine Corps Lance Corporal Alex Cornell du Houx of Solon, serving with U.S. forces.

Cornell du Houx, a member of the Bowdoin senior class and president of the college Democrats, would be graduating next week with his classmates if he hadn’t been called up by the Marine Corps last December.

Since then, he has been in touch with Bowdoin students who took up a collection to fund the food purchase after hearing that the dining experience in Iraq pales in comparison to what Cornell du Houx has experienced in Brunswick.
