Boy, 12, accused of starting couch fire

FARMINGTON – A 12-year-old Jay boy was charged with criminal mischief Saturday for allegedly lighting an old couch on fire with a lighter.

The fire spread to grass and brush behind Sherwood Apartments.

Farmington firefighters were able to contain the blaze on Poverty Lane, behind the apartment complex, to about two-tenths of an acre, Forest Ranger Joseph Stevenson said Monday.

A group of boys had been playing behind the buildings about noon when the fire was reported, the ranger said.

Franklin County Sheriff’s Deputy Edward Hastings, who is also a Farmington police officer, was able to round the children up quickly, Stevenson said.

Two more boys were interviewed but they didn’t really partake in the fire and they were given warnings, the ranger said.
