Boys’ basketball: Dirigo thumps Lisbon

DIXFIIELD — A strong start usually means a victorious finish for Dirigo boys’ basketball, and that was true again Thursday night.

The inside-outside work of Riley Robinson, who scored a game high 24 points, and Clay Swett , who added 12, steered Dirigo to a 79-31 triumph over Lisbon at Defoe Gymnasium.

Dirigo (2-1) jumped out of the gate to a double-digit lead in the first four minutes, with Robinson scoring four baskets. The Cougars were in command 23-3 after the first quarter.

“It was a great effort. I hadn’t seen that from the boys in a long time,” Dirigo coach Travis Magnusson said. “We have guys who can push the ball. I was able to get two units of five out there early.”

Lisbon (1-2), which managed only a 3-pointer in the first quarter, displayed a better flow early in the second period.

Free throws by Joe Philbrick and Darren Wood, plus a trey by Jonah Sautter (five points) was it, until Tyrese Joseph sank a free throw with one minute to play in the first half.

“In the first quarter, (Dirigo) scored 10 points off our turnovers,” Lisbon coach Jake Gentle said. “They are quick and have one of the better defenses in Class C. It was a good test for us, because we cannot simulate that type of pressure in practice.”

The Greyhounds missed 11 of 14 shots, went 3-of-12 from the free-throw line and turned the ball over 19 times in the first half.

Dirigo scored 10 consecutive points to open up a 35-11 lead. Gavin Arsenault and Robinson each converted off steals. Kaine Hutchins and Swett added baskets.

Senior point guard Tyler Frost (nine points, 10 assists, six steals) made a pair of free throws in the run.

“This was a better effort,” said Robinson said, who added six rebounds and three steals. “We played together and were very unselfish. Once again, we had players step-up like Joe Casey (nine points), Cooper Chiasson (seven points), Luc Lueders (three assists) and Nick St Germain.”

Dirigo shot 50 percent from the field and committed 11 turnovers.
