Committee to welcome Fresh Air Children

AUBURN — The Central Maine Committee will welcome a small group of New York City children as they arrive in Auburn Monday, Aug. 10.

Volunteer host families share their summers for up to two weeks with Fresh Air children, ages 6 to 18, who leave behind the city streets to run barefoot in the grass or see the stars at night.

Some children are leaving home for the first time, while others are returning to visit the same host families for consecutive summers.

Rogers to speak at Raymond-Casco Historical Museum

CASCO — Raymond-Casco Historical Society will host Dr. Steven B. Rogers presenting “Nathaniel Hawthorne and the Shaker Communities” at 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 10, at the museum Route 302.

Rogers will share his knowledge about Nathaniel Hawthorne and his relationship with the Shaker communities in Maine, Massachusetts and New York. Steven’s focus will be centered on the period of time when Hawthorne was living in Raymond in the historic site currently known as the “Hawthorne House.”

Park Avenue Pickers to host jam session

AUBURN — The Park Avenue Pickers will host an open jam session for all interested musicians at 6:15 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 11, at 439 Park Ave.

All music selections will be welcome, including bluegrass, gospel and blues. This event is open to all levels of acoustic musicians from beginners to advanced.

MS representative visits support group

LEWISTON — The Multiple Sclerosis Support Group will host ost Jaye Vandussen from the MS Society at its Wednesday, Aug. 12, meeting.

Vandussen will be at the meeting to talk about programs and services offered by the society and have an open informal question.

Weaning breast feeding to be discussed

AUBURN — The La Leche League, an organization that offers breastfeeding information and encouragement to pregnant women, new mothers and growing families, will hold its next meeting at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 13, at 102 Bennett Ave. 

The topic will be “Breastfeeding, the Mother-baby Relationship, and the Weaning Process.” The discussion will include nutrition for nursing mothers, introducing solids to babies and weaning the breast-fed baby.

Babies are always welcome. Pregnant mothers may attend meetings in preparation for the baby’s arrival. All mothers are welcome to attend for continued support throughout their breastfeeding experience.

ACFA opening enrollment

LEWISTON — The Child and Adult Care Food Program Androscoggin Head Start is currently accepting new providers.

The Child and Adult Care Food Program is designed to assist qualifying individuals in serving nutritious meals and snacks by issuing earlier monthly reimbursement checks, offering on-line claiming, providing all paperwork, paying all postage, offering personalized on-site support and information, sending monthly newsletters, providing suggestions for healthy meals and snacks and connecting with a local network and support group of family child care providers

Through the program, those participating have access to a staff of professionals in the field of nutrition, health, education, special education, social services, and food services.

High Street food pantry accepting donations

AUBURN — The High Street Food Pantry is accepting donations, with an ongoing need of the following items: peanut butter, canned vegetables, soup, canned pasta, canned fruit, dry cereal, baking items, soup crackers and toilet paper. Donations can be dropped off at the Auburn United Methodist Church at 439 Park Ave.
