Beacon House plans yard sale

RUMFORD — The Beacon House, located at 3 Canal St., will be having a yard sale on from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Aug. 29 and 30.

Donations are being accepted for the sale. Items may be dropped off at the Beacon House from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Illustrated talk at Cary Memorial

WAYNE — The Cary Memorial Library in Wayne is hosting A Closer Look at Indonesia, an illustrated talk by Kevin O’Rourke, at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 30, at the Williams House, 14 Old Winthrop Road.

O’Rourke will provide an in-depth portrait of Indonesia, including a brief history and a description of society, regional differences and current affairs, including Indonesia’s struggle against corruption and movement towards democracy.

O’Rourke is the author of the non-fiction book “Reformasi: the struggle for power in post-Soeharto Indonesia.”

A reception featuring light refreshments will follow the presentation.

‘Preserving the Harvest’ workshop

FALMOUTH — University of Maine Cooperative Extension staff and volunteers will offer hands-on Preserving the Harvest workshops that incorporate USDA-recommended food preservation methods, including hot water bath canning, pressure canning and fermenting.

Participants will make samples to take home. Fresh produce, canning jars and other canning equipment will be provided.

Local September workshop includes “Boiling Water Bath Canning Tomato Salsa,” which is set for 1 to 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 4, at Nezinscot Farm, 284 Turner Center Road, Turner.

Cost is $25 per person.

Used book sale at Buckfield

BUCKFIELD — The Friends of Zadoc Long Free Library are sponsoring the annual used book sale to be held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 7, at the Masonic Lodge Hall, 4 High St., Buckfield.
