Brownfield father dies in auto crash

BROWNFIELD – Maine State Police say a 48-year-old man was killed Tuesday afternoon when a car being driven by his teenage son struck a tree in Brownfield.

John Freeman of Brownfield died after being flown to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.

Trooper Lucas Hare said the 1980 Volvo was being driven by Freeman’s 17-year-old son, Robert, who had obtained his driver’s license permit last Friday. The father, Hare said, was giving his son a driving lesson.

Hare said Robert lost control of the car when he attempted to turn a corner at the intersection with Shephard River Road. The vehicle hit a tree on the passenger side.

John Freeman, who was in the front passenger seat, was airlifted to Central Maine Medical Center.

Robert Freeman was treated at Bridgton Hospital for some abrasions, cuts and an injured leg, and released the same day.

Both were using their seat belts.

The crash was reported at 4:25 p.m.
