Bruins recall Kessel from Providence

BOSTON (AP) – The Boston Bruins recalled rookie Phil Kessel on Sunday after a brief conditioning stint in the AHL following surgery to treat testicular cancer.

The Bruins also recalled goalie Philippe Sauve and assigned center Yan Stastny and goalie Hannu Toivonen to Providence of the AHL.

Kessel played two games last week for Providence, scoring in a 2-1 loss Saturday to the Manchester Monarchs.

He learned he had testicular cancer shortly before playing in a Dec. 9 game against New Jersey. He underwent surgery three days later to remove his right testicle.

Kessel has appeared in 27 games for Boston this season – his last against New Jersey – scoring five goals and making four assists.

Sauve has played in two games for Boston this season, earning no decisions in relief.

Toivonen was recalled from Providence before Boston’s 4-3 win Saturday over Philadelphia, but did not play. He has played in 10 games for the Bruins this season, posting a 2-5-0 record.

Stastny has played 20 games for the Bruins, making two assists.
