Bruna A. Austin

1929 – 2014

PORTLAND — Bruna A. Austin, 84, of Lewiston, passed away peacefully Friday evening, Feb. 21, at Maine Medical Center with her loving family by her side following a short illness.

She was born in Lewiston August 27, 1929, a daughter of Joseph and Eldora (Lotti) Spugnardi. Bruna was educated in local schools and graduated from Lewiston High School in 1947.

On July 27, 1957, she married Kenneth Austin. During the course of her marriage to Ken, they resided in many different countries as they raised their sons, eventually settling in Lewiston in 1970. During her younger years growing up, she spent many days living and working with her grandparents who owned Bruno’s Fruit and Variety. Upon returning to Lewiston from living overseas, she started a career that spanned several years working in several local jewelry stores including Day’s Jewelers, Carlyle and Co. and Paul Rodrigue Jewelers. She created a following of many loyal customers in the business until her retirement in 2004.

She was very proud of her family and to the end, her only concern was of their well-being.

Bruna was a longtime parishioner of the former St. Joseph’s Church and most recently a member of Holy Family Church. Among her favorite enjoyments were special times with family and friends and in her younger years, bowling in local leagues. She was a loving, devoted and hard-working wife, mother and grandmother who will be dearly missed.

She leaves her husband Kenneth Austin of Lewiston; two sons, Bruce Austin and wife, Louise, and Mark Austin and wife, Anita, both of Sabattus; five grandchildren, Stacy Austin and fiancé, Garrett Joslyn, Jeremy Austin and companion, Crystal Murphy, Benjamin Austin and wife, Alishia, Joseph Austin and wife, Kristyn, and Patrick Austin; two stepgrandsons, Gregory St. Hilaire and wife, Arica, and Jason St. Hilaire and fiancée, Michelle Remillard; four great-grandchildren, Matthew Moody, Lennox Joslyn, Paxton Austin and Elizabeth St. Hilaire and the two that she wished to hold here on earth, but will be with them in Heaven until they are born; two brothers, Louis Spugnardi of Sarasota, Fla., and Albert Spugnardi and his wife, Marianna, of Lewiston; many nieces and nephews; and a sister-in-law, Beverly Hanrahan of Auburn.

She was predeceased by her parents; and a brother, Donald Spugnardi.
