BUCKFIELD — A variety of colorful characters marched down Turner Street in Buckfield on Monday in the annual Labor Day parade to kick off the Community Day celebration.

This year’s theme for the largest parade in the state was “the good old days,” and those watching experienced a trip back in time, thanks to the antique cars and tractors chugging down the road.

Popular characters such as Woody from “Toy Story,” Smokey Bear and Yogi Bear also caused some nostalgia, but SpongeBob SquarePants and a couple of Minions were there for the younger generations.

Joined by a moose and a lion, all caught a ride in a trailer pulled by a John Deere lawnmower with Popeye the Sailor Man in the driver’s seat.

Buckfield Junior-Senior High School simulated a classroom in the good old days, complete with a chalkboard and vintage get-ups.

Then came all things mini — the Kora Crazy Cops of the Kora Shriners buzzed by in their tiny cars, waving and throwing candy to the laughing children watching them.

A miniature horse named Nutmeg sauntered by, ridden by a little dog named Zowie. The two were pulling a cart and drew plenty of giggles and excitement from the crowd.

Paula Dobbins of Hartford said the parade always gets a great turnout. She and many other onlookers planned to head over to the field behind the Buckfield town office after the parade ended to enjoy the festivities of Community Day and celebrate the end of another summer.
