Busy boating season expected

LACONIA, N.H. (AP) – Marinas in the Lakes Region are predicting a busy summer, despite high gas prices.

Dean Clancy, a salesman at Lakeport Landing Marina in Laconia, says if someone’s got $50,000 to $200,000 invested in a boat, they’re unlikely to balk at spending $1,000 on gas for the season.

Boaters also get a break on gas prices, compared to drivers. Drivers pay 18 cents a gallon in state road taxes, but boaters can get a rebate if they save their receipts and file forms with the state Department of Transportation.

Gas prices have gone up about 37 cents a gallon over the past month and are expected to keep rising through the summer.

Meanwhile, the boating season is starting early, after “ice out” on Lake Winnipesaukee came three weeks earlier than normal.
