FARMINGTON — The town Recreation Department has developed Cabin Fever programs for children during March.

For those in grades 4, 5 and 6, three programs will be held once a week in the Bjorn Gymnasium at the Farmington Community Center, Steve Shible, recreation director, said.

“It’s time to put the basketball away,” Shible said.

Registrations are being accepted for indoor lacrosse, indoor field hockey and Saturday morning batting practice.

The lacrosse program will be held from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Wednesdays, beginning on March 5 and continuing for four weeks. Participants will learn the basic rules of lacrosse and technical drills such as catching, throwing and scooping up ground balls. Scrimmages will allow the opportunity to apply the skills. This is an entry-level, non-contact lacrosse activity.

The Recreation Department will provide sticks, helmets, gloves and mouth guards. Any other protective equipment is the responsibility of the player.

The program is limited to the first 10 to register. A fee of $20 is payable to the instructor, Heather Galasyn, a student at the University of Maine at Farmington, who has several years of experience playing lacrosse.

An hour program of indoor field hockey follows from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesdays, starting March 5. This program exposes youngsters to the basics, emphasizing important skills while teaching basic rules and team strategies in five-on-five drills and scrimmages. Sticks, protective eyewear and mouth guards are provided by the department.

This program is also limited to the first 10 to register due to equipment and space needs. A payment of $20 for the instructor, Carrie Mooney, is suggested.

Those ready for a little early batting practice may want to check on the Saturday Morning BP program. Children will have the opportunity to hit against a pitching machine in the gym. Staff will provide pointers on ways to improve their throwing and fielding using “softee” baseballs or softball.

The program takes place from 9:30 to 11 a.m. every Saturday beginning March 8.

Scott Peacock will direct the program with help from staff members Chris Silva and Hannah Lust.

The cost for the program is $5 per training session. Space is limited to the first 14 to register and pay.
