Campaign seeks to prevent underage drinking during prom season

RUMFORD — “Wow Times Have Changed” is the theme of this year’s campaign to prevent underage drinking during high school prom season.

The campaign is being spearheaded by the River Valley Healthy Communities Coalition in collaboration with the Oxford County Underage Drinking Enforcement Task Force and area businesses to make underage drinking a thing of the past, said Sandra Witas of the coalition.

The campaign has been notifying people at local motels and businesses in the River Valley of local prom and graduation dates — Mountain Valley High School’s prom is on May 21 — and asking them to keep an eye out for signs of underage-drinking parties.

The River Valley Healthy Coalition encourages people to report any activity that may involve underage drinking. Parents and interested parties can find healthy party tips on the 21 Reasons website, www.21reasons.org. And, former Maine Attorney General Steven Rowe has posted specific prom and graduation tips on YouTube (keyword-promstart) at the site http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-BODm5Yk2Vw.
