AUBURN – A businessman was killed Wednesday afternoon when the car he was working on slipped onto his chest, crushing him.
Police said Michael Higgins, 37, was dead when rescue crews arrived at the accident scene, a lot next to Higgins Sports Center at 64 North River Road.
Higgins was lying on his back beneath the car when it slipped and fell an estimated 3 to 4 feet down onto him, police said.
“From what we’ve seen, it looks like he was doing some work on the vehicle, which was held in the air on a farm tractor,” said police Detective Lt. Jason Moen. “At some point, the car slipped down onto him.”
The accident was reported about 3:30 p.m. Police and rescuers found Higgins pinned underneath the Buick in a grassy lot behind a garage.
It was not known what Higgins was doing to the car or how long he’d been working on it.
The small tractor believed to have been used to hoist the car was found sitting next to the Buick. Police took measurements and spoke with potential witnesses as the investigation continued.
Higgins worked at Higgins Sports Center, a family-owned business that sells boats, guns and other sporting equipment.
