CAROLYN HAWTHORNE BARTON
RUMFORD – Carolyn Hawthorne Barton, 86, of Dixfield and Florida, passed peacefully into the loving hands of her Lord at the Rumford Community Hospital on April 8.
She was born in West Peru on May 27, 1923, the daughter of John Leighton and Irene Burgess Knight. She graduated from Stephens High School and was employed in the payroll department at the Oxford Paper Co. for many years. In 1945, she married E. A. “Bud” Hawthorne of Dixfield and together they owned and operated the Hawthorne Funeral Home of Dixfield, until his death in 1987, where Cal also owned her beauty salon for over 30 years.
In 1990, she married Theodore S. ‘Ted’ Barton of Keene, N.H. They wintered in Sarasota, Fla. and summered at the family cottage at Worthley Pond, until his death in 2006. Carolyn was a self-described ‘home-body,’ who enjoyed gardening and being with her family.
She leaves a daughter, with whom she resided for the past 18 months, Sandra Fuller and her husband, Steve, of Dixfield; a son, Allen Hawthorne and his wife, Linda, of Largo, Fla.; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a half-brother; three stepsons; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her brother and a stepson.
