Carr collects five RBIs as Colby rolls over Bates, 16-3


LEWISTON – Junior third baseman Andy Carr went 5-for-6 with three runs scored and five RBIs as Colby hammered Bates 16-3 in a NESCAC east division baseball contest at Leahey Field on Friday.

The Mules (7-12) pounded out 18 hits and scored multiple runs in five different innings. First-year shortstop Craig Cooper went 3-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs, while junior Brian Liberty went 2-for-4 with two runs, two RBIs and three stolen bases.

Bates (7-11) sophomore Casey McCormack hit a leadoff double in the first and scored on Erik Hood’s sacrifice fly. In the fourth, Brian Mahoney scored on a single from Adam Worral.

St. Joe’s 7, USM 4

GORHAM – Dustin Spiller had three hits and a pair of RBIs, and Luke Enman plated the winning run with a double as St. Joseph’s stole a 7-4 victory from the University of Southern Maine baseball team on Friday.

The Monks scored three times in the eighth inning after a sacrifice bunt by Mark Clapp led to a two-run throwing error. Clapp ended up at third base on the play and scored the game-winner on Enman’s two-bagger. St. Joseph’s (23-6) tacked on a couple of insurance runs in the ninth.

Senior pitcher Pat Foley pitched seven strong innings, scattering three hits, but the Monks rallied against reliever Brett Rogers.

Bowdoin 11, Roger Williams 1

BRUNSWICK – Trevor Powers tossed a complete game, scattering seven hits and striking out nine for the shutout, as the Bowdoin baseball team tied a school record with its ninth-straight win, an 11-1 rout of Roger Williams.

Shortstop Chris McCann sparked the Polar Bears (19-5) on offense, going 4-for-6 with three runs scored. Joe Berte had a two-run single in the fourth, and Nick Lawler had an RBI double.

Andrew Lippincott hit a solo home run to account for the lone score of the game for Roger Williams (16-19).


UMF swept

FARMINGTON – Thomas College swept a doubleheader from the University of Maine at Farmington in NAC baseball action on Friday.

Matt Pavlis singled in the go-ahead run in the sixth inning for a 6-5 victory after the Beavers rang up five runs in the fifth to tie the score in Game 1. Devin Gill, Corey Provencher, and Aaron Wolfe all scored for UMF. Gill was 2-for-3 in the game.

Thomas (12-16) left no room for a comeback in the nightcap, as Mike Chamard went 3-for-5 with three RBIs en route to a 13-4 win for the Terriers. Brian Gardner pitched six innings of three-hit ball for the win. The Beavers fell to 5-14 with the loss.


Brandeis sweeps

BRUNSWICK – Starting pitcher Kaitlin Streilein gave up two runs on six hits with three strikeouts to help Brandeis University to a 7-2 win in the first game of a doubleheader against Bowdoin. Streilein also went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored at the plate, while Danielle Mayer hit a two-run double for Brandeis (15-21).

Jessica Paris went 2-for-3 with an RBI for Bowdoin in the loss.

In the second game Natalie Volpe went the distance allowed three hits with no walks and four strikeouts in a 4-1 victory to complete the sweep. Elissa Glucksman went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, while Christina McWilliams had a double in both games for Brandeis.

Sarah Stern hit an RBI single for the Polar Bears’ (15-17) lone run.
