Yankees stand alone in more ways than one

Nov 21, 2009 12:32 am

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I read your column every day — a lot of nice information. Please find out for me why the Yankees baseball team does not have the names on the back of their uniforms. I watch a lot of baseball, and all the other teams have their names on their uniforms. — No Name, Mexico

ANSWER: Sun Spots can't verify the answer that she found on the Internet, but here it is. From www.funtrivia.com:

Local charities accept wide variety of items

Nov 20, 2009 5:07 am

DEAR SUN SPOTS: Could you please help me locate a place to donate used men's suits? I know Dress for Success takes women's career wear, but what about things for local men? I also have some jackets for both sexes. In addition, where can I donate a barely used shower chair? Christmas decorations? Used sheets and towels that I no longer want? Perhaps a listing of local nonprofit organizations that help people or animals would be beneficial to readers cleaning out their homes? Many thanks. — Molly, Greene

Smoking is prohibited in most public housing

Nov 18, 2009 2:58 am
DEAR SUN SPOTS: I have many senior friends at Barker Mill Arms in Auburn. They can't smoke any more in the building, so they have to go outside in an open building out back. I'm worried about the winter months ahead. I realize they should not smoke. But what concerns me is the cold winter months ahead. Some use walkers, and some are very unstable on their feet. I'm concerned that they will fall and lay there in the snow. I realize this is a problem everywhere now. But I have volunteered for many years with seniors, am now a senior myself and don't smoke.

Nov 17, 2009 1:13 am

DEAR SUN SPOTS: Thank you for providing a service to so many people. Plus not everyone has a computer to find out information. Thank you. — No Name, No Town

DEAR SUN SPOTS: Is there anyone in the Portland or Lewiston area who teaches tole painting, preferably with oils? Where can I find such a bottle? Please do not use my name. — No Name, Westbrook

Nov 14, 2009 12:22 am

DEAR SUN SPOTS: You have helped me before, so I am turning to you once again. I have several cards that I would like to send to service women or men to let them know how much I appreciate what they are sacrificing to help keep our country safe. I would like to know where I could call or write to obtain some names and addresses. Thanks for your good work. — Mabel Goding, Poland

ANSWER: Apparently there used to be a way you could send cards to "any soldier," but that appears to no longer be the case due to terrorism concerns.

Thank you. — No Name, South Paris

Cat spraying difficult but not impossible to beat

Nov 12, 2009 1:48 am
DEAR SUN SPOTS: I have a really big problem and hope you can help me once again. I have a 13-year-old cat that's been neutered since he was a baby, and he sprays in the house. He's been checked out at the vet, and they tell me that it's all behavior. He's spoiled rugs, furniture, etc. I tried everything to make him stop. They told me to use Comfort Zone plug-ins, which I did, but he sprayed on them. I used pepper, mouthwash and a few other things. Is there anyone who has a solution I could use to make him stop doing this? I do not want to have him put down because of this problem.

Lamp repairs can be simple do-it-yourself job

Nov 11, 2009 2:33 am

DEAR SUN SPOTS: Could you please find out where I can get a lamp repaired? It is quite new. One day I turned it on, but it did not come on. I changed the bulb, checked for power, but still no luck. I think it may be the cord connection. Thank you. — No Name, No Town

ANSWER: There no longer appears to be a small-appliance repair shop in the L-A area. (If anyone knows of one, please let the column know.) However, you may be able to fix the lamp yourself.

Nov 09, 2009 1:14 am

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I registered my car in October. My tags had run out in June, but I couldn't afford to register it then. So now that I can afford it for October, the Mexico registration bureau said they have to go back to June. So I got gypped out of five months. Is this the law or did someone at the bureau have a bad day that day? Keep up the great work! — G.M.L., Mexico

Reader wants recipes from Kennebec Bean Co.

Nov 04, 2009 12:23 am
DEAR SUN SPOTS: I am told that A1 (Kennebec Bean Co.) in North Vassalboro is now out of business. I loved the recipes from the back of their bags, but assumed they would always be available so I didn't save them. Do any of your readers have recipes saved from these bags that they can share with Sun Spots? I would especially like to find the recipes from the 1-pound bean bag. Did Kennebec Bean ever produce a recipe book or booklet? Here's the one recipe I still have from the 1-pound bag of barley. I thought your readers might like to have it.

¾ cup pearled barley

Second, a group of us would like to know what color the Lewiston city buses were in the 1940s and '50s. We all have different colors in mind. Thank you. - Marguerite Thibault, Lewiston

Leaving cell phone on charger not necessarily bad

Oct 31, 2009 12:52 am

DEAR SUN SPOTS: When my husband is home he keeps his cell phone on the charger all the time even when it shows that it is fully charged. He says that it will last longer if he keeps it plugged in beyond the point that it is fully charged. I tell him if its 100 percent charged it won't charge beyond that. Will this continuous charging do anything to the cell phone battery? Am I crazy or is he obsessed? — Anonymous, No Town

Different kinds of salt have preferred uses

Oct 24, 2009 12:23 am

DEAR SUN SPOTS: Can you please tell me the difference between different kinds of salt: iodized, sea and kosher? On some of the cooking shows on TV they use a lot of kosher salt. Thank you. — No Name, Jay

ANSWER: All salt has the same basic chemical makeup of about 40 percent sodium and 60 percent chloride and came from the sea originally, although there may not be an ocean present where it is currently mined. Salt deposits can be found in the Midwest, which was once covered by water.
