Jessica Turcotte of Poland has been named to the dean's list at the University of Southern Maine for the spring semester with a grade point average of 4.0. She is a sophomore majoring in social and behavioral sciences. Turcotte is a graduate of Poland Regional High School and is the daughter of Marc and Diane Turcotte of Poland.
BRUNSWICK — Bowdoin College held its annual Sarah and James Bowdoin Day ceremony on Oct. 30. Students who are designated Sarah and James Bowdoin Scholars are in the top 20 percent of each class for the previous academic year. In addition, those scholars who earned a GPA of 4.0 are designated Sarah and James Bowdoin Book Award winners.

Sara Joan Powers of Auburn, class of 2011 and Audrey Blanche Bergeron of Lewiston, class of 2012.
Katelyn Bermudez of Auburn was inducted into the Tau Delta chapter of Lambda Pi Eta, the National Communication Association Honor Society, during a ceremony at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Conn., on Oct. 18.
Students with at least a 3.0 cumulative grade point average with 60 semester credit hours completed and students with at least a 3.25 GPA for communication studies courses with 12 semester credit hours completed are eligible to be inducted into Lambda Pi Eta.
Zachary Delcourt of Lewiston has been awarded a scholarship by the Two Ten Footwear Foundation. Delcourt will use the award to attend University of Maine at Orono.
The Two Ten Footwear Foundation Scholarship Program was established in 1969 to provide need-based scholarships to people in the footwear, leather and allied industries. The program helps students meet the cost of higher education at colleges, vocational/technical school and nursing programs. Annual awards range from $200 to $3,000 and may be renewed.
Ashley Wiencek of Auburn earned her associate degree in culinary arts from The Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, N.Y. on July 2.
Wiencek is a 2007 graduate of Edward Little High School.
Quinn A. Hathaway of Industry has made the dean's list for the August 2009 session at The University of Northwestern Ohio, College of Technologies. Full-time students must receive a grade point average of 3.5 or better to be named to the dean's list.
BIDDEFORD — Three area residents recently participated in the annual White Coat Ceremony at the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine. The ceremony formally recognizes the transition students make from lay persons to those assuming the responsibility of physicians.
Former Edward Little High School student Barry Daniel Smith of Auburn recently graduated from Hesser College, Manchester N.H., with a degree in criminal justice. Smith has joined the U.S. Army and will attend nine weeks of military basic training and five weeks of AIT school at Fort Sills, Okla. in November. His career field specialty will be artillery weapons crew member.
Sarah Elwell, a sophomore at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Agriculture Sciences and Natural Resources in Lincoln, Neb., received a Holling Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $1,000. She is majoring in animal science. Elwell is a graduate of Lewiston High School. She is the daughter of Steven Elwell and Julie Gomez of Lewiston.
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y., has announced the winners of the Rensselaer Medal. Felicia Nicole Stewart of Auburn is the honoree at St. Dominic Regional High School.
Mary Ella Ganong, daughter of Brian and Peggy Ganong of Lisbon Falls, has graduated from Baptist Bible College in Clark Summit, Pa. She received a bachelor of science degree in theology with an emphasis in family counseling, and ended her studies with a 3.78 grade point average. Ganong is currently employed at the Lisbon Falls Community Library as the assistant children's librarian.
Members of Elmira College's Class of 2013 were recognized during the college's fall academic convocation for receiving Valedictorian, Salutatorian, Presidential, Trustee or Founder Scholarships.
Kalinda Cox of Bethel, majoring in biology-chemistry, earned the Founder Scholarship. Cox is the daughter of Laura Tyler.
Shelby Black of Norway, majoring in international studies, also earned the Founder Scholarship. She is the daughter of Barbara Rooth and Paul Black.
Loren Michelle Lepage of Lewiston was awarded a bachelor's degree in science cum laude in occupational therapy from the University of New England on May 8. Lepage is presently completing her clinicals in Berlin, N.H, and Philadelphia, Pa., towards graduating with her masters this spring. She graduated from Lewiston High School in 2005 and is the daughter of Marc and Diane Lepage of Sabattus and Robert and Sandra Beauchesne of Lewiston.
Kelsey Nicolas was initiated into Phi Sigma Biological Sciences National Honor Society at Endicott College in Beverly, Mass. She is the daughter of Jones and Bonita Nicolas of Auburn.
Phi Sigma Biological Sciences Honor Society was founded at Ohio State University in 1915 for the purposes of promoting research and academic excellence in the biological sciences. Membership in Phi Sigma is not merely for recognition of academic excellence and achievement; it also serves to further develop interests, knowledge and opportunities in biological sciences.
Molly W. Swallow, daughter of Dr. Peter and Lucia Swallow of Farmington, graduated in May from Duke University, Department of Community and Family Medicine Physician Assistant Program, with a masters in health science degree. She completed her medical rotations in August, sat for her national boards and was hooded a Physician Assistant - Certified.
Kristen Eaton of Litchfield was named to the dean's list at New England College in Henniker, N.H., for the spring 2009 semester. Eaton is a junior.
Ethan Pierce, grandson of N. Charles and Jan Strout of West Gardiner, participated in Harvard's Freshman Urban Program of Service. The program engages students in social justice issues, providing an introduction to community service and activism at Harvard and in Boston. Participants and their upperclassmen leaders spent the week volunteering with Boston-area nonprofit organizations and learning about their new urban environment.
Ceara Teixeira of Lewiston, participated in Susquehanna University's student calling program. Currently, 31 students participate in the program. Student participants contact parents and alumni to encourage them to support the university, located in Pennsylvania, by making a donation. Funds raised are used to support scholarships, laboratory equipment, research, athletics, the library and the arts, among other endeavors.
Westfield State College in Westfield, Mass., has recently named local student Alexandra Wight of Poland to the dean's list of the spring 2009 semester. Wight is currently majoring in English. To receive dean's list status, a student must complete a 12-hour semester with a grade point average of at least 3.3, have no grade below a 2.0 and have no incomplete grades.
Tyson Larochelle of Lewiston has earned dean's list recognition for the summer 2009 semester at Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston, Mass.
Joshua Keniston of Readfield recently earned his master of education from Harvard University, Cambridge, Mass. He majored in higher education, with a special interest in the financial and fundraising operations.
Keniston is the son of Martin Keniston and Linda LaRue-Keniston of Readfield and the grandson of Roger LaRue of Auburn and Elizabeth Keniston of Cape Elizabeth. He is a graduate of Maranacook High School.
Keniston will begin his career at Emerson College in Boston as assistant director of annual giving.
Thomas Robitaille of Litchfield has been named to the dean's list for the summer quarter at Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, N.Y. A fourth-year student in the College of Applied Science and Technology, Robitaille is studying environmental management.
He is the son of David and Susan Robitaille of Litchfield and is a 2006 graduate of Lewiston High School.
Sadie L. White, daughter of Stephen and Marcia White of Wyman Township, received a bachelor's degree from Bates College on May 31.
A 2005 graduate of Mt. Abram High School, Salem, White majored in sociology at Bates and attained dean's list status for the winter semester with a 3.93 grade point average.
Her graduate activities included America Reads and America Counts in the Lewiston-Auburn elementary schools, Bollywood Dance and Bates Stars. She was the recipient of the Mehrman-Swett Award for the most outstanding sociology thesis in 2009.
Christopher Emery of Auburn, a first-year student at Susquehanna University, participated in SU GIVE (Susquehanna University: Get Into Volunteer Experiences) on Aug. 29, when more than 600 students, faculty and staff participated at one of nearly 40 volunteer project sites serving organizations in Selinsgrove, Pa., and the surrounding communities. Emery is a graduate of St. Dominic Regional High School, and the son of Gerald and Heather Emery.
