'Life's reality': Writer, advocate, foster care leader finds the positive in life

Jul 06, 2009 12:00 am

LEWISTON — Dustin Strout has no family. He has resided in a mental institution, two group homes, five foster homes, several friends' homes and numerous homeless shelters for nearly 20 years, but nowhere within those places did his family reside.
"I grew up and raised myself," he said.

Strout's story goes not from rags to riches but from rags to community advocate, and all by age 21. His experience reads like a best-selling novella; one whose current chapter surprisingly tells of college enrollment and community activism.

On Friday afternoon, amid continued cloudy skies with just the occasional pop of sunshine, a LifeFlight pilot radioed to his ground crew that, while he didn't want to seem like he was rubbing their noses "in it," he felt compelled to report "there is a sun up here."
Not so on the ground, where the sunshine was skimpy at best.

Jul 05, 2009 12:00 am
In this economy, it's so unlikely it sounds like the start of a fairy tale: Western Maine and the happy tax collectors.
After bracing all winter for piles of unpaid bills in the wake of job losses and shrinking investments, tax collectors looking at property tax rolls and new liens say they've been surprised to find that the bad news didn't come. Many homeowners are paying their taxes as well as they always have, if not better.
"I was really a little skeptical at the beginning of the year," said Betty Griebel in Auburn.

Pyrotechnicians ready if the fireworks show goes on

Jul 04, 2009 12:00 am
AUBURN — Fireworks and water just don't mix.

"Obviously, you can't shoot in the rain because the product just won't go off," Zduniak said. ""But also, if you do get it to go off, it might go off low and be too close to people. Somebody might get hurt, and you can't let that happen."

50,000 seashells. Dust Bowl dust. Everything in between. Welcome to the old (new) Turner Natural History Club Museum

Jul 04, 2009 12:00 am

TURNER — Maxine Hinkley tugged open two drawers she'd never opened before and gasped.
Stacks of bird bodies piled one on top of another. Feathers as fluffy as the day they dropped out of the sky a century ago.
And around each ankle, a little ID tag: Pine Siskin, 1892. Bay-breasted warbler, 1890.
The unexpected drawer of birds joined a dozen-plus stuffed animals displayed around the room. And a pine cone collection. A bird nest collection. A snake and snakeskin collection. A dirt collection in carefully labeled glass bottles, one with Dust Bowl dust.

The answers are as diverse as the people who come here.
