Obama: Statistics show need for overhauling health

Sep 10, 2009 12:00 am
WASHINGTON (AP) - Trumpeting nurses' support for a health care overhaul while lamenting a worsening toll of uninsured, President Barack Obama kept up the pressure Thursday for congressional action.

"We don't need more partisan distractions," Obama said in remarks at the White House, speaking again on the issue just 14 hours after his Wednesday night address to Congress and a national television audience. "We have talked this issue to death. ... The time for talk is winding down."

Lawmakers denounce 'You lie' outburst at Obama

Sep 10, 2009 12:00 am
WASHINGTON (AP) - Democrats and Republicans alike are denouncing Rep. Joe Wilson for shouting "You lie" at President Barack Obama during his speech to Congress, an extraordinary breach of decorum for which the South Carolina Republican swiftly apologized.

"I was embarrassed for the chamber and a Congress I love," Vice President Joe Biden said Thursday on ABC's "Good Morning America." ''It demeaned the institution."

Sep 09, 2009 12:00 am
WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama urged Congress to enact sweeping health care legislation Wednesday night, declaring the "time for bickering is over" and the moment has arrived to help millions who have insurance and many more without it.

His nationally televised speech to a joint session of Congress comes as Obama's popularity is falling, opposition Republicans are on the attack and his fellow Democrats are divided about what kind of plan to pursue.

Sep 08, 2009 12:00 am
HOLDEN, W.Va. (AP) — The chief executive of coal mining giant Massey Energy blasted supporters of climate-change legislation and other environmental issues affecting the coal industry at a free Labor Day concert and rally in southern West Virginia.

CEO Don Blankenship said he wanted to show people at the event how government regulation is hurting the coal industry, driving up energy prices and making the country less competitive.

Some Catholic bishops question gov't health care

Sep 06, 2009 3:24 am
DENVER (AP) — U.S. Roman Catholic bishops have taken a consistent line on a health care overhaul: It's vital, but they cannot support proposals that go too far in covering abortion and not far enough in protecting health workers who don't want to provide that procedure.

Now, at least a half-dozen bishops have gone beyond that position, some of them using hard-hitting terms such as "socialization" and "monopolization" to launch a broader critique of big government.

Inside Washington analysis: An unusual, expensive jobs plan

Sep 06, 2009 2:30 am
WASHINGTON (AP) — A veteran House member from Hawaii has found a way to help his state's struggling construction industry - and boost his campaign for governor. The catch? It would cost taxpayers an extra $10 billion.

Democratic Rep. Neil Abercrombie wants to legislate high wages for a massive construction project in the federal territory of Guam, restrict the ability of foreigners to get those jobs and hope Hawaii residents, although 3,800 miles away, will flock there for the work.

For the jobless, Labor Day is hardly a holiday

Sep 06, 2009 2:27 am

WASHINGTON (AP) — Every day it's a battle.

The nearly 15 million unemployed Americans won't enjoy Labor Day as a relaxing respite from work. Instead, they'll once again need to prepare to get up, hit the pavement and keep hunting for a job.

As the jobless rate nears 10 percent, even those fortunate enough to be employed fret about keeping their jobs. But for those without them, it's a daily struggle with emotional and economic distress.

Astronauts take mission's 3rd and final spacewalk

Sep 06, 2009 12:00 am
CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida (AP) — Two spacewalking astronauts took on shelving and antenna jobs at the international space station Saturday in their final trek outside.

For the second time in three days, lead spacewalker Danny Olivas and his partner Christer Fuglesang ventured out to work on the outpost, orbiting 220 miles above the planet.

They quickly made their way out along a girder and pulled open a shelf that will be used to store big spare parts later this year. Olivas helped install the framework on the right side of the space station two years ago.

Recovery difficult as jobless rate hits 9.7 pct

Sep 05, 2009 1:50 am

WASHINGTON (AP) — At least it's not all bad anymore.

The nation's unemployment rate climbed last month to 9.7 percent — the highest in nearly a generation — but the number of job losses was less than expected and the smallest monthly total in a year.

"It's good to see the rate of job losses slow down," said Nigel Gault, chief U.S. economist at IHS Global Insight. But with unemployment rising, "there isn't the underlying fuel there for strong consumer spending growth," which is vital for a strong recovery.

U.S. moving out of Iraq ahead of schedule

Aug 31, 2009 2:30 am
BAGHDAD (AP) - The U.S. military is packing up to leave Iraq in what has been deemed the largest movement of manpower and equipment in modern military history - shipping out more than 1.5 million pieces of equipment from tanks to antennas along with a force the size of a small city.

The massive operation already under way a year ahead of the Aug. 31, 2010 deadline to remove all U.S. combat troops from Iraq shows the U.S. military has picked up the pace of a planned exit from Iraq that could cost billions.

Bush daughter joins NBC's 'Today'

Aug 31, 2009 2:28 am
NEW YORK (AP) - NBC's "Today" show has hired someone with White House experience as a new correspondent - Jenna Hager, the daughter of former President George W. Bush.

Hager will contribute stories about once a month on issues like education to television's top-rated morning news show, said Jim Bell, its executive producer.

Hager, a 27-year-old teacher in Baltimore, said she has always wanted to be a teacher and a writer, and has already authored two books. But she was intrigued by the idea of getting into television when Bell contacted her.

Kennedy carried to Arlington, laid beside brothers

Aug 30, 2009 12:00 am
WASHINGTON (AP) — Sen. Edward M. Kennedy was laid to rest alongside slain brothers John and Robert on hallowed ground at Arlington National Cemetery on Saturday evening, celebrated for "the dream he kept alive" across the decades since their deaths.

Crowds lined the streets of two cities on a day that marked the end of a political era — outside Kennedy's funeral in rainy Boston, and later in the day in humid, late-summer Washington. With flags over the Capitol flying at half-staff in his memory, his hearse stopped outside the Senate where he served for 47 years.

Brazen burglar grabs TV in double-steal

Aug 30, 2009 12:00 am
PENSACOLA, Fla. (AP) — Police in Florida say a burglar who made off with a man's valuables returned to the home later while investigators were there and snatched what he couldn't carry on his first trip: a 100-pound plasma-screen TV.

The burglar had left the TV in the backyard and investigators were going to dust it for fingerprints.

But hours after the first burglary and with a Pensacola Police investigator still at the home, the robber came back and took the TV.

7 found slain at Georgia mobile home, 2 badly hurt

Aug 30, 2009 12:00 am

BRUNSWICK, Ga. (AP) — Seven people were found slain and two critically injured Saturday at a mobile home park built on the grounds of a historic plantation in southeastern Georgia, police said.

Glynn County Police Chief Matt Doering called it the worst mass slaying in his 25 years of police work in this coastal Georgia county. He wouldn't say how the victims died.

"This is a record for us. We've never had such an incident with so many victims," Doering told reporters. "It's not a scene that I would want anybody to see."

Chances of health compromise take another hit

Aug 30, 2009 12:00 am
WASHINGTON (AP) — A leading GOP negotiator on health care struck a further blow to fading chances of a bipartisan compromise by saying Democratic proposals would restrict medical choices and make the country's "finances sicker without saving you money."

The criticism from Sen. Michael Enzi, R-Wyo., echoed that of many opponents of the Democratic plans under consideration in Congress. But Enzi's judgment was especially noteworthy because he is one of only three Republicans who have been willing to consider a bipartisan bill in the Senate.

Aug 29, 2009 1:23 am
CAROLINA BEACH, N.C. (AP) — People along the Carolina coast braced for approaching Tropical Storm Danny, which reinforced the dangers of even a weakening storm after a young boy went missing Friday in rough surf.

For most residents of this community 40 miles north of the South Carolina line, Friday started as a normal, humid summer day with cloudy skies, no rain and chest-high waves crashing on the sand.

Temp Kennedy successor may influence law change

Aug 28, 2009 3:10 am

OAK BLUFFS, Mass. (AP) - Whether Massachusetts changes its law for filling congressional vacancies may hinge on who would be picked to serve as an interim replacement for Sen. Edward M. Kennedy.

Party activists and political observers say that if Gov. Deval Patrick and others are going to persuade lawmakers - and the public - to allow a temporary appointee while a five-month special election campaign is held, they may have to leak the name of a prominent party statesman who they would propose for the assignment.

Aug 27, 2009 2:54 am

WASHINGTON (AP) - The White House is asking doctors to help promote its drive to overhaul health care, marking an effort by President Barack Obama to regain momentum on the issue.

Aug 27, 2009 2:53 am

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford rebuffed his lieutenant governor's call to resign Wednesday, two months after he admitted an affair, saying he will not be "railroaded" out of office and plans to finish his term.

Sanford returned from a nearly weeklong disappearance in June to acknowledge the affair with an Argentine woman, a revelation that led to questions about the legality of his travel on state, private and commercial planes.

Suicidal planet seems on death spiral into star

Aug 27, 2009 2:50 am

WASHINGTON (AP) - Astronomers have found what appears to be a gigantic suicidal planet.

The odd, fiery planet is so close to its star and so large that it is triggering tremendous plasma tides on the star. Those powerful tides are in turn warping the planet's zippy less-than-a-day orbit around its star.

The result: an ever-closer tango of death, with the planet eventually spiraling into the star.

Aug 27, 2009 12:00 am
KABUL (AP) - A U.S. service member died Thursday in a militant attack involving a roadside bomb and gunfire, a death that pushed August into a tie with July as the deadliest months of the eight-year war.

The death brings to 44 the number of U.S. troops who have died in Afghanistan this month. But with four days left in the month, August could set a new record.
